Golf GT How powerful? - simonc1978
I'm currently driving a courtesy car - Golf GT, 56 reg, diesel automatic. I'm trying to find out how much bhp it has.

I was looking on the interweb and some reports seemed to suggest it has 168bhp and others were saying 140bhp.

The VW site doesn't help. Anyone know where I can get a definitive answer?

The GT was available as both 140PS and 170PS version of the diesel. So it could be either. A VW dealer might be able to help?

Replacement for the GT and Sport models is now the imaginative GT Sport ;-)

Take it up to the red line at rest on a quiet bit of road, bang it into drive and time it to 60. That ought to give you a clue... :o)

Look under the boot floor carpet by the spare wheel - there should be a sticker with vehicle details including engine output in kW.

If it hasn't been modified then the 170PS car will have twin exhaust pipes (diesel & petrol), whereas the 140PS will be hidden under the bumber.

Can't you tell by the colour of the i - you know the higher powered version has a red i....

The Mk V badges aren't colour coded anymore.

I hadn't realised.......doh

It's not a GTi - just a GT.

I'll check the boot but I think it must be a 140bhp - I haven't noticed the twin exhausts.

IIRC if its GT it is 140 diesel (or 1.4 170 TFSi petrol), if it is GTi it is 170 diesel (or 2.0 200 TSi petrol).

Both of the diesels, 140PS & 170PS are badged as GT only, the 170PS is not badged as a GTi, if you look on the VW site then the specs show only a few external differences i.e. twin exhaust pipes for the 170PS.
