C5 2.2 HDI Automatic road test - machika
No comment so far on the latest road test which, given that HJ was very impressed with the car, is a bit of a surprise but then it is a C5.

Sounds like my kind of car but I will have to wait until there are some second hand ones around. The VTX sounds like good value and is not a lot more expensive than the 2.0 HDI VTR auto.

It's does sound good doesn't it , and it would certainly be on my replacement list. My only concerns are, as always
with high list price Citroens, is the d-word - especially now the new model is in the pipeline (late 2008?).

I could imagine paying, say, £16-18K for an ex-demo/management 2.2 HDI auto Estate exclusive/vtr in late
2007 & finding is 'worth' half that a year or so later (after a new model) - not a big deal if you keep it 3-5
years, but my profligacy often means I change after a year or so.

Still, the headline spec. really ticks my sensible boxes: big swoopy capacious estate, long-legged comfort,
smooth powerful frugal diesel, slick 6-speed auto allied to Gallic chic & idiosynchrosy.

"allied to Gallic chic & idiosynchrosy". You forgot dreadful Gallic build quality and questionable long-term reliability

Yes, but have you noticed - at least on this forum - that there is plenty of French-car-bashing, but it's almost always directed at Renaults and Peugeots, very rarely at Citroens. Either we have some lucky Citroen owners on here - or maybe just people who look after their cars and drive them considerately - or Citroen's build quality is actually better that that of their compatriots.

Maybe a bit of both. Citroen plastics always look basic to me, but perhaps they don't actually fall apart much. To some extent this is true of the Japanese also - the money goes on the oily bits which matter, leaving the showroom appeal to the likes of VW.

Thought I'd mention the fact that Autocar are running a long term test on a C6, and to date no breakdowns, bits falling off, etc.

They were full of praise for it, including the styling. Hopefully this will bode well for the C5 replacement.

"Autocar are running a long term test on a C6"

And by "long term" I assume they mean 6 months?

Long term in my book = 10 years.

Most car mags have no idea of living with a car cos they get new ones every 3-6 months..

id give a c6 a chance at 5k with a good history. i had a v6 xm a few yrs ago it was a great car that never went wrong and it had 120k on the clock when it went.

I'd give one a chance for a lot more than that (if I had the money of course). Got to be a terrific motor unless you're into clouds of tyre smoke and that sort of thing.

Schhhh Keep quiet, or residuals will go up and you wont get the chance to get one.

I am still busy perpetuating the myth. Xantia left here after 12 years faultless service and the C5 is still here, now in its 5th year with us. Not faultless but not bad.

You might be able to stumble across a heavily subsidised PCP or personal contract hire deal, however these deals tend to come & go pretty quickly, so lining that up with your own circumstances is a matter of chance.

Well, the discounts available make the VTX available for under £15K, which is pretty good. Not that I would like to pay that much but I would pay £10k for a nearly new one.
