People whine in a litany for an 'edit button' enabling them to alter posts after the event. Sometimes one can almost see what they mean. The mild form of insanity induced by this dabbling in the virtual world, a sort of false omnipotence, often leads one to write things one later wishes one had not written. It is particularly galling when those things appear in a thread which is then closed.
It's easy to misunderstand things. It's easy to overreact. It's easy to be nasty to someone inadvertently, to think you're being smart when you're not, to think you're being funny when no one can understand what you're on about.
In fact given all of this, the more or less equable and pleasant atmosphere on this forum is little short of miraculous. A bit like the absence of a permanent general bloodbath on roads overcrowded with carphounds and idiots.
So: congratulations. So far so good, eh?

What IS he on about?
I may report him as offensive.
: )
Spot on.... I cringe reading some of my posts and feel very guilty to those I've wronged! Other posts of mine are, of course, sheer genius.

Before I opened the thread I thought (because this is a motoring forum) it was meant to be entitled Carlessness. What an anti-climax.

Let's pretend it is, l'escargot!

Minicab controller, c.1975, addressing driver who didn't know Hampstead:
'Flask Walk, Rog? Flask, as in, what you keep your whisky in, Rog? and Walk, as in, what you do when you 'aven't got a motor...'
Authentic quote. OK escargot? :o)

Yes agree. Apart from the quality of postings, I think alot of the 'atmosphere' is created by a pro-active moderator
regime. Although some have mentioned a slightly baby-out-with-the-bathwater reaction, to my mind it can nip unpleasantness
or a tendency to flame, in the bud.
An edit button might though create as many problems as its proposers see it solving - an unalterable chronological thread
allows a sensible understanding of topics , wheras post hoc alterations could muddy waters somewhat & make supervisory moderation
untenable.
I even think the 'post reply' to mid-thread post is a little confusing & adds little, especially when we can all quote easily enough.

One way would be to allow editing for 30 minutes after the post, as the Guardian site does. That way, you have time to correct typos or think better of something posted in haste, without retrospectively spoiling the flow of the debate.

I believe this type of editing could well spoil the flow of the debate, WDeB, as several responses may have been given during this time.

It's all academic since we won't be getting an edit button. Been discussed many times.

Yup. Once posted, the die is cast.
If it's a serious mistake one can always post again.
