Hi Honest John.
I have a cavelier K reg, last week as we were going up a hill the engine died.
It still turns over but doesnt spark up!!!! My 1st thoughts were the Plugs,rotor arm or mabe the ignition coil,so have changed the plugs, leads rotor arm and ignition coil.......but still no joy!!!
Any ideas??? Thanks maverick36

Have you checked for a spark, or could it be a fuelling problem?
The only reason I ask is these used to be notorious for fuel pump relay failure. Does the fuel pump buzz for half a second when you turn the ignition on?
Cheers

That would depend on engine size. Both my previous 2.0 litre engined Cavaliers never primed the fuel pump when the key was turned, but a mates 1.8 did.

Hi sorry forgot to mention it. It is a 1.6 and yes iv checked 4 a spark and its not sparking at all!!! not sure bout the buzz on the fuel pump but will check.....thanks

If this is the 16 SV,
Check to make sure the distributor is actualy turning when you crank the engine over - take the distributor cap off and watch the rotor arm. If the rotor doesn't turn, check;
The distributor drive - these can fail as they are driven by a fragile plastic drive pin. Try to turn the rotor by hand. It shouldn't turn. If it does, the drive has failed.
If the distributor drive is OK, but the rotor doesn't turn, check the cambelt. If the cambelt is OK, take the rocker cover off, and check the camshaft - it's not unknown for camshafts to snap in these OHC engines.
When you have checked this out, come back to us.

i had forgotten about them,funny how you forget stuff over the years

Ah yes, once upon a time those plastic drives were good for business (or at least a bit of lurk outside the workshop on a breakdown!). Funny how the foreman found the time to do breakdowns on sunny days, but not on rainy days!
