My old man is thinking of getting on as a weekend, summer car. What are people's feelings on the Rover and any alternatives up to £2.5k ?

The Pug 306 cabrio would fit nicely into harryhammer senior's price bracket. Plenty of good examples on the Autotrader link to the left of this page.

How about a 216 - Honda-engined I think?

He was unsure which engine was the honda version, if it's the 1.6 then I will recommend this to him. What about a MX5/eunos or Astra ?

The 216 is the Honda engine, not the 214.
With the Honda engine, its a very nice car and generally, these particular models are better looked after than their hatchback/saloon versions as they were quite expensive when new so will hopefully come with a decent SH.
Do only go for a 216 though - cabriolet is heavy compared to normal hatch so 214 is underpowered. 216 auto is a particular favorite of mine ( had a 416 auto and it was a fantastic car ).
Best ones to look for are those with leather as much easier to sell on and avoid Amaranth Purple like the plague - best in BRG, Tahiti Blue or Nightfire Red. Silver also looks ok. Did come in Charcoal grey but its a really dull looking colour on this shape and Flame Red looks cheap.

SWMBO bought a 306 Cabriolet new back in 1995. Lovely car. I'm often tempted to try and find a decent one before they have all gone. How Peugeot could ever 'replace' it with the 307CC is beyond me - they are hideous!

That's because it's a CC ------- I've yet to see a CC that looks 'right' with the roof up.

Apart from the EOS? That looks good for a convertible, without the qualification of 'for a CC'

There's still a qualification needed though, as you rightly wrote; "for a convertible"
The 306 Cabrio mentioned above though looks pretty, pert, and just plain "right" in a timeless way without the need for any qualification.
