Hi
My 1998 1.4 petrol (distributorless ignition and injection) 106's head gasket went a while ago.
Had the head skimmed and new gasket. Also replaced Lambda sensor, plugs and HT leads.
Am now experiencing an uneven tickover, seems worse when engine is hot and I sometimes think it misses a little at slow speeds around town.
Any ideas what this could be?
It recently passed its MOT so emissions seem to be ok (they are not adjustable anyway as the computer chip controls all the settings?)
Thanks for any help.

Could be many things; but a common one is the Sagem coilpack back-spiking the ECU through it's unique "phase detection" circuitry and upsetting the idle.
If the coilpack is made by Sagem you have a choice. Bin it before it damages the ECU - or bin it because it's damaged the ECU.
Replace it with a Bougicord one from the dealer along with a set of genuine plugs. They're critical on these.

Thanks Screwloose
My coil has a Bosch sticker on the side of it - but could be worth trying a new one as you suggest.

My 1.4 1998 injection 106 has started missing/uneven tickover and seems to miss at low speeds.
I have replaced the Lambda sensor, new plugs and HT leads and am unsure what to try next.
Maybe it's time for a tune-up specialist- i'm in the area that used to be covered by Adam Going of Tune-Up UK who has recently moved on. Does anybody have contact details for the chap who has replaced him as their website is not working?
Thanks.

The idea of engine tuning [in the conventional sense] has virtually died the death now. All you need to do is to get you local garage to read the fault-codes and then post them on here.
If you've got access to the tool, a compression test is one thing that's worth doing. I've had a few injectors fail [mainly the Marelli ones] on these; but the Sagem coilpacks are the commonest fault. Code-read it first though.

you could try an italian tune up !!!!!!!!!!!!!

an Italian Tune-up is a good blast down a fast road - often works wonders on cars mainly used in town. it could be sticky valves a can of redex/stp etc and a italian, what have you got to loose !!!!!!!!! or if it is definetly a missfire then the dis packs/coilover plug are common problem

carry out ain air intake service using BG206 and 44k.
if you want to know how this works... more importantly why.... you will see that technology affords us the means to carry out a 'tune-up' now.

the misfire you are experiencing... is it at idle only?... i ask because you may be experiencing what many technicians confuse as a misfire.... which isnt, in actual fact its the purge valve re-introducing fuel vapour via an unmeasured source which cretaes a brief 'stammer' in the unit. This technology was introduced many years ago because of emission laws and the fuel system cannot vent to air. It has to be re-introduced... this creates the sensation visually and audibly of a misfire - only noticeable at idle.

Thanks for your suggestions.
I took out the plugs this evening and found that the one near the cam belt was dark and sooty while the other three look as they should (ie light tan colour). Does this suggest an injector fault?
By the way this engine seems to be multi point injection if that makes a difference.
Thanks

Posted the other day about poor idling/slight miss on 1998 1.4 injection 106.
Took plugs out yesterday and noticed black sooty one nearest to timing belt while the rest are light tan colour?
Does this suggest a faulty injector?
Thanks.
