My daughters Clio bought a few days ago is giving trouble. After an hours run and a short stop the engine will restart but will not respond to the accelerator and the engine management warning light is on.. Her boyfriend has had the car plugged into a fault diagnosis machine and 2 faults showed up: the cat sensor(?) and the throttle pedal sensor. Both these have been changed now but the fault still exists. Any ideas what to change next?

Is the light still on? If so it is probably in limp home mode still.
Ecu probably needs resetting

The short answer is to take it back to where you bought it. This sounds very like the reason it was disposed of in the first place.

It might still have a conventional throttle cable on that year; but this sounds much more like the fly-by-wire throttle body fault that's quite common on certain versions of these. A new throttle body is the usual answer; but get a specialist to look at it first.

What is the "cat sensor?"

It was a private sale - no warranty. It is fly by wire so it looks like a new throttle body. Where is the best supply?

Make sure it wasn't a dealer posing as a private seller. Was his name in the logbook etc. Then you'd have a six-month legal presumption on your side.

Those FBW throttle bodies are b-i-g money; see previous comments about specialist confirmation/reason for sale.

In reply to Stuart - the light goes out when the engine has cooled enough to run properly again perhaps a couple of hours. I have seen mention of the coolant temp. sensor in similar forum threads; is it worth changing this as a cheaper option?

I have made a mistake. The car is a 1.2 and the "cat sensor" referred to earlier is the post cat lambda sensor. Sorry.
