xantia suspension fluid. How do I drain - brittaink
Hi, just wondering how I drain excess fluid out of my citreon xantia suspension. the brass ring is just above the second red ring when the suspension has settled at the highest level and the engine is idle. I have a feeling that my fluid is way over full. My brakes are very sharp and are sticking a bit on the front. Also I am getting a ticking sound from the suspension every 1-2 seconds when driving. Maybe unrelated but I am unsure.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

The ticking sound is the front central sphere behind the radiator it needs replacing ,over filling does not do any harm. The brakes sticking is a different matter you need to check out the calipers are ok often need replacing on aged cits if they are ok then there is a box of tricks that operates the fluid pressure to the brakes and also acts as a compensator I have had it putting on the rear brakes but never the front a very expensive item if I remember, also check out the handbrake mechanism.

is the handbrake cable operated or is it linked with the hydraulics. Brakes are definetely sticking at the front and only for around 1 or two seconds after releasing the brake pedal.

Cable operated

Does anyone know how to drain fluid though because I still think it is to high?

Just undo any coupling and let it pour out but it will not do any harm being overfilled the filler resevoir is on the low pressure side.

"the brass ring is just above the second red ring when the suspension has settled at the highest level and the engine is idle. "
Doesn't sound too excessive and it will drain itself if overfull via the cap (or clear tube) on top of the reservoir.
Ticking is, as Andy said, most likely the accumulator sphere in front of radiator - easy to replace with a good wrench, but you must release pressure in the system and when doing this you MUST HAVE CAR SUPPORTED ON AXLE STANDS OR RAMP, NOT JUST A JACK - a Xantia landing on you could be a DEADLY experience!
Sharp brakes are a characteristic of hydraulic Cits - they require the lightest of pressure and seem sharp to new users - but "ordinary brakes" seem very ordinary to those used to the Cits!.
Brakes stickin? There can be corrosion which causes this - I will try to find references to this - RichardW will probably be along in a mo' to tell you all about it!
If not, your Q put on here will get a good response (probably from RichardW!!!)

Doesn't sound overfull to me - if it is it just leaks out onto the top of the reservoir.

The brake corrosion problem is related to the rear - causes the calipers to twist and eventually touch the disc making them squeal all the time.

Front brakes sticking is not common on Xantias, but can be caused by water getting in and rusting the handbrake mechanism under the rubber boot.

The brakes should be sharp (as in needed little pressure) but they should never be 'grabby' ie responding seemingly late, which encourages the driver to press harder followed by a sudden stop - this is usually caused by gas in the rear brakes, and this is usually coming from a failed anti-sink sphere.

Agree that this car needs a new accumulator - and this may well help brake feel.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
