I have a passat with the standard radio cassette player (it has 'GAMMA' on the little flap that you put the cassette in) and seperate CD player.
When listening to music on the radio, the sound changes as though the treble has been turned right down. It lasts like that for anywhere between 10 seconds and a couple of minutes before returning.
I thought, initially it would be a loose connection somewhere, but then I noticed that it didn't do it with CD and it doesn't do it during speech on the radio, ie R4. it doesn't even do it when the DJ's on the music stations are talking, and it does it on all radio music, not just on one station.
In the book it says something about a setting for recognising speech and music and altering something automatically, but I couldn't understand what it was supposed to do or how to turn it off.
Did I read it right? Is it the problem or is the radio knacked?
Help please.
thanx

look for a large brown article with BIN on it and dispose in here ;-)
Nice little journey down to halfords a little bending of the plastic and bob is indeed your uncle with iso plugs included

I'd read the manual properly and try to adjust the controls. while sitting behind the radio.
IIRC the radio manual is as long as the car manual. I have the same set up in my Passat.
Replacement with a Halfords wireless (sic) will be cheaper than VWs. Bring back valve radios.

vw radios have a well known problem with the volume failing and wandering - something to do with the settings being stored in eprom and the eprom wearing out. Although I have come across it on the concert units rather than gamma.
doesnt sound quite like your problem, but I wouldnt bother spending much effort on the existing unit when aftermarket ones are quite cheap and probably better (play cd mp3 etc)

The thing I hate with my VW radio is that I cannot get R4 longwave, so I can't listen to the test matches or listen to R4 while I am abroad.
Mercs and BMWs can get long wave, so does anyone know why VAG cars are fitted with radios without longwave?
This would be a reason not to buy a VW again. The factory fitted radio/casette/cd works well and looks good, that is why I don't want to get another one with all those flashing lights.
|
Because listening to longwave is like having your teeth drilled? I'd rather miss the cricket.
|
If I were travelling in France and wanted to get the news, Longwave is the only band that gets English programs. Even in Cannes you can just hear R4 longwave.
VAG you could put longwave in your cars for pennies, please do so if you want to sell me and a few other people your product in the future.

£10 on ebay
Sorry to be so thick, but what is £10 on ebay?

Thanx for the replies.
If I do replace the head unit with an aftermarket one, I've got an Sony in the garage, tape player and a 10 disc changer, how is it going to affect the single disc player in the dash if i don't fit the multichanger? Is it still going to work?
I've not got a problem fitting a new stereo if needed but reason I've left it standard so far is because I'm lazy and can't be bothered to pull up the carpet etc to run wires about the place.
