Better the devil you know................
If the car has gone 4 yrs and only cost £500 in repairs it has been magic
You would have to spend quite a lot of money to buy a car say 4 year old and there is no gurantee that it would be better than your own car. Your Mondeo is worth very little - why not keep it as depreciation is now next to nil and repairs have been modest.
On the other hand if you have £10K spare - fancy a change for something fastier/sportier or just a newer car - go ahead and buy one.

a friend of a friend has a 16 year old cavalier with over 100k on the clock, and if i remember correctly, he now does 3000 miles a year, it passes its mot every time with no faults, and he keeps it clean & tidy, although he services it at home every 3 years only !

Absolutely, keep the car. Cars like yours are worth next to nothing to a buyer but 'worth' more in real terms to the current owner (if that makes any sense).
Having recently sold a car I didn't want to sell (needed something bigger) I was left feeling like I sold it for too little and paid too much for the replacement (I doubt I'm alone in this feeling?). Better the devil you know is right, why get rid of something which is treating you pretty well?
