Could anyone advise what carburettor needle is appropriate for a 998 A series with a single 1 1/2 inch H4 SU?
The carb is from a 1275 and has a DZ needle and (amazingly?) appears to run quite well on the 998, but it can't be optimum. I'm sure some 998's used the 1 1/2 inch SU, but I can't find the needle information anywhere.

I live 100 yards from an SU specialist, e mail me (see profile) if you want me to ask him your question and maybe obtain parts if you require them

I knew I'd regret lending my copy of David Vizard's "tuning BL's A-Series Engine" to a friend in Sweden who has purchased a Mini 850 in super nick and wanted some engine info!
Good luck anyway. Brings back memories of the great fun I had overboring and tuning my MG Metro from 72 to 93 BHP, playing with SU needles along the way.

Going back 25 years! I had a 998 Mini with 12G295 skimmed Cooper head and an 1.5" H4 SU from an Austin 1300. The correct needle to use (as was then) was a H6. It improved my fuel economy from 30 mpg to 40 mpg with no real loss in performance.
I had more fun in that car than all the rest put together!

According to Viz a standard single carbed 998 should have a "red" spring strength and an "Ac" needle set up.

Thanks for that! The engine is actually in a Minor, and has the 12G295 head. It's a 998 by virtue of Mini pistons and the fully floating 1098 con rods. Built the engine years ago when the 'tuning' bits were available. I'll bear the H6 recommendation in mind if it suits a tweaked engine.
Thanks to all for the input, especially AS who's already e-mailed the page from the SU book!
