I have just purchased a very nice 03 Focus 1.8 LX but unfortunately it only came with the one key incorporating the remote. I have been quoted about £130 for a new spare remote from a Ford agent which will mean leaving the car with them for reprogramming the original and new remotes and evidently also the cars original installed immobiliser.

In our local high street the shoe repair/key cutting shop has copied the metal part of the key for a very reasonable £7 which opens the doors, unlocks steering and powers radio etc. but of course doesnt disarm the immobiliser or start the engine. He says that he can copy my existing remote fob on to a new non-remote fob for £50 which sounds a relative bargain. My worries are that if his system has a hiccup I could lose the original remotes settings which would probable mean a horrific main agents bill.

I am surprised that his proposed method of cloning the original key fob is not more widely available even after quite a lot of web searching, sounds too good to be true. Your advice on this would be much appreciated.
Many Thanks - Miken

hi
just had same problem on 07 fiesta,bought a second remote of ebay £19 had it cut,£6 but would not turn immobiliser of, so try this if you have two keys that do work with the first key that works,turn ignition on turn off pull key out do the same with the second key,then do the same with the one that doesn,t work wait 30 seconds then try, this worked with my new remote.

I had a non-remote key cut at a Ford dealer for a fraction of that price. It does everything that the original non-remote key does. Why do you want a second remote?

Some Ford cars need two remotes;one of mine does because the alarm can only be set and turned off with the remote.If you lock the car and set the alarm with the remote and then try to unlock just with the key, the alarm goes off.This is why some Fords come with two remotes and others with just one.On some early ones both locking and alarm setting could be done with the key.

If you arm the alarm car with the remote you can use the non-remote key to disarm the alarm by you opening the drivers door and putting the key into the ignition and turn the key to disarm the alarm. You'll only have a few seconds to do this before the alarm is triggered but if that happens it will stop as soon as the key is turned in the ignition and the key is programmed and compatible with that particular car, hence you only need one key.

Not on my Ford;the alarm will start if you open the car with the key having set the alarm with the remote-no other way of setting it!-putting the key in the ignition and even starting the car does not stop the alarm.The alarm can only be stopped with the remote and that is why this car is supplied with two remotes.There were other systems on earlier cars as I said-even ones where both deadlocks and alarms could be set with the keys.Locking the car with the key will do just that-lock the car but not set the alarm.

jc, which models come with that setup ?

Have a look down this link for a locksmith near you www.autolocksmiths.net/# I found one near me who did a key for my Yaris- the blade had broke off fob and in end he cut a new second key and put transponder in it and made key/fob key into a fob only - I know it's slightly different but the one I used was very helpful indeed. £30 instead of Toyota £130.

My current '06 Ka has it and I presume the other models supplied with two remotes(of which there are several) have it.

Thanks for all the responses to my original query, a lot of interesting info but doesnt exactly answer my problem. I managed to buy a simple key with no chip for £7 which opens the doors, unlocks the steering and lets you use radio etc. but wont disarm immobiliser to start the car. I only have the one remote key and no other 'intelligent' key so cant follow the handbook instructions to re-program a new fob. I'm not bothered about a new intelligent key being remote but dont want to have an even more expensive problem if I lose the only one I have.

----continuing my previous reply: - The local shoe repair/key shop seemed to be offering to clone my one and only intelligent key fob for £50, I am worried that he might destroy the embedded info and with a 'sorry mate' and leave me with an even more expensive problem. Probably best to swallow hard and go to the main dealer I suppose.

Talk to a Autolocksmith first.

You could always buy one of these;

cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-KEY-BLUE-CHIP-TRANSPONDER-FOCU...m

or;

cgi.ebay.co.uk/Focus-Ka-Mondeo-Fiesta-Escort-Couga...m

and take it to ford, so as only to pay their labour charge for programming the immobiliser part. The central locking programming on a spare remote is easily done by oneself.

I would give your local key shop a go. They are unlikely to render the one good fob that you have useless, as if this was the case I reckon they wouldn't risk trying in the first place. The key copying technology has come on a long way and you are talking about a 4 year old Focus key - not a brand new 'up to date' version. Why pay top dollar to Ford, when you don't have to?
