As though the authorites weren't doing enough to slow us all down:

It now looks like we're going to lose a peak time lane on a very important river crossing. What next ? - Humps on the A102 M?

" TfL says increased congestion at the south approach to the tunnel is expected after the system is removed."
Thanks!

I don't believe the "danger" reason for a minute. In the morning the traffic is moving so slowly and is so packed in the southbound tunnel there's no question of overtaking. Plus, the whole thing is monitored with cameras. Even with the tidal flow system during the 8 years (late 80s-mid 90s) I was using the tunnel regularly it took 45 minutes Northbound in the morning and another 45 minutes southbound in the evening and that was on days when no over-height lorry got stuck in the tunnel. I pity the poor drivers now. I think this is just about increasing congestion to help justify a charge, or saving money because the tidal flow system needs to be maintained and operated. As a driver I am so glad I don't have to put up with that sort of attitude anymore.

"I don't believe the "danger" reason "
On the contarary, Whilst travelling southbound, home from the night shift, I have witnessed 3 near misses in the last year. All 3 events involved drivers driving against the oncoming traffic (despite more than adequate signage). TFL have a duty of care to prevent any reasonably foreseeable incidents. If idiots drive against the traffic despite there being plenty of signage, what else could TFL do to prevent accidents?
Still a complete pain though!........I'm am now glad to be catching the train to work.

Hang on a moment - I've just had a brilliant thought.
Yes, truly inspired !
To "improve" road safety why don't they just ban junctions (always a point of potential vehicular conflict). Think of the saving on traffic light maintenance. To follow we'll ban parking so that those sad misguided souls who don't look over their right shoulders when pulling out don't get hit and hurt. Motorbikes - well, enough said....far too dodgy - ban them now.
What? there are still single carriageway roads around with no concrete barrier separating the two traffic flows - accidents are pretty common here. Do we ban them completely or just put road humps on them all.
Am I a tad upset by what morons are doing to UK roads? Just a bit - it's becoming totally bonkers.

It was initially requested by the metropolitan police on grounds of public safety.

TVM - do you really believe that ?

As it happens, in this case I do. The Met and TfL rarely agree about anything, but int his case the met approached TfL and TfL agreed.

This is nothing to do with road safety. It is a decision taken deliberatly to increase congestion in this already busy area, and in a couple of months from now, the Mayor will be telling us congestion is so bad there is no choice but to introduce tolling. The decision was also taken with no consultation with people or councils that are directly affected by this insane idea. Transport for London are just creating gridlock for London.

Oh for gods sake.

Hardly matches your consipiricy theory does it.
Even TfL and ken are not daft enough to try that one.
HAd you seen the local news last night you would have SEEN the filmed near misses and the Met police spokesman who said it was a move requested by them.

A further problem, not mentioned so far, is that this tidal flow closure doesn't only affects Tunnel users. It affects other roads for miles around.
So besides the A102 Blackwall Tunnel approach getting clogged it's also:
* Large areas of SE London, including the Woolwich Ferry and the busy A2, A20 trunk roads as people seek out alternatives.
* Public transport also suffers. Bus services get caught in the jams so they take longer and become more unreliable.
* Access to London City airport becomes more problematic for travellers based in South London.
Until early this year there used to be ample car parking at North Greenwich station (close to the Tunnel) so weary drivers could leave their cars there and take the Jubilee Line. But most of the spaces are now blocked off for users of the 02 (when it reopens). Only a few places are now left and they're reserved for season ticket holders.
All in all a massive waste of time for everyone.
|
The Blackwall has been awful for 25 years +. Investment in a new crossing is the answer. And remove the tolls at the Dartford. What happened to the east London river crossing?
The overtaking in the tunnel can be eliminated by using the bendy poles that fit into the cats eyes.

And I'm glad you live up North as well.

We have tunnels in't north as well you know. And the scousers realised 'tidal flow' didn't work years ago.

aye its not so grim up here as was first thort at least you can move the blasted motor car round these parts
|
Isn't that because most of the locals can't afford cars? I know this because I've driven over Middlesborough and observed the inhabitants below. I've always felt that the A19 through - or rather over - the centre of the town was a very civilised approach to motoring; priority to the car driver etc. Or was it the A66?
