Oil Leak - Andrew Collier
My 306 TD has just developed a small oil leak just after having an oil change. Any ideas as to the cause and cost of repair. Can it be that the oil was overfilled and if so will this right itself in due course.

Any ideas appreciated,

Sump plug washer? It's a crush washer which should be replaced every time.

That's a favourite.....
Re: Oil Leak - Andrew T
Drain plug washer doesn't need replacing if you wrap it with a few penn'orth of plumber's PTFE tape at each oil change.

Might I suggest that the proper way to re-euse a copper sump plug (if you have to) washer is to anneal it, by heating it with a blow lamp (gas cooker ring will probably do) to dull red and then quenching it in cold water.

As Dave Lacey has pointed out, on this engine it is a "crush" washer - the section is round as fitted to the plug and it then crushes to a perfect fit between the plug and the sump as it is tightened. You will virtually never get an oil-tight seal by re-using this type of washer.

Anyway, what does a sump washer cost ? 10p or so ! I know, in an emergency etc etc... , but if it has been professionally serviced it should always be a new washer.

Adam - I know sump washers don't cost the earth, but I suggest that only those in the trade can get them for 10p !
Re: Oil Leak - Richard Turpin
Why don't you check whether you have overfilled with oil. It's called a dipstick. Drain some out if overfull otherwise the bottom of the pistons will hit the oil in the sump on the downstroke.
A washer from an old sparking plug works as an emergency washer for the drain plug.
Re: Oil Leak - Trevor Potter
Sensible Question (maybe) - can you tell where it's coming from?

If it is sump washer/plug it should be easy to find.

How much oil leak? 2 drops? big stain?
Re: Oil Leak - Andrew
Might not have a sparkplug around - its a TD!!!!!!!!! 30 Love.

If the filter was changed, could it be that this is not screwed home sufficiently ?
