Might I suggest that the proper way to re-euse a copper sump plug (if you have to) washer is to anneal it, by heating it with a blow lamp (gas cooker ring will probably do) to dull red and then quenching it in cold water.

As Dave Lacey has pointed out, on this engine it is a "crush" washer - the section is round as fitted to the plug and it then crushes to a perfect fit between the plug and the sump as it is tightened. You will virtually never get an oil-tight seal by re-using this type of washer.
Anyway, what does a sump washer cost ? 10p or so ! I know, in an emergency etc etc... , but if it has been professionally serviced it should always be a new washer.

Adam - I know sump washers don't cost the earth, but I suggest that only those in the trade can get them for 10p !
