Don't know if anyone can give me any advice, this is the first time I've posted on this site!!
I have a Renault laguna 1.6 (2000 reg) and lately I've noticed the air con is not working properly. In the warm weather recently the chilled air comes through very weakly & intermittently, even with the fan on full blast, there is also an intermittent 'screaching' sound from the engine compartment when the air con is on.
I haven't noticed any leaks but I've no real knowledge of air con systems. As I've got small children I'd to get this sorted for the hot summer day outs but is this going to be a big bill?!!!
Before I pay out for an engineer to have a look, has anyone any thoughts, it'd be much appreciated.

Sounds like either the drive belt for the A/C compressor is slipping (If it is indeed belt driven, someone else will know for sure), or the clutch mechanism that allows power to be transmitted to the compressor.

Thanks mss1tw, I guess I'll have to get someone to have a look who knows what he's doing!

Hi
The Air con pump on these Laguna's is belt driven (i had two of these cars, and despite the problems i miss them) - *ahem* anyway they are belt driven, but someone who knows about these will be able to tell you whats wrong with it - however it could posiibly the belt slipping on the pump wheel that is causing the screeching
