Hi, we have a "M" reg Ford Escort with the flattened stick type key and the locks have all decided to lock but not unlock.
The fuel cap and ignition still works and that is all.
I have used WD40 and 3in1 but to no avail.
Other than doing a Mr Bean with a hasp i have no idea other than removing the locks
Any ideas

It will almost certainly be a worn key. Have you got a decent spare?
|
or worn locks
consider some new locks for the doors from ford
a complete kit is only £75 just fit the door locks and keep the ignition key so the immobiliser still works in the ignition barrel
|
Hmm, it probably is the locks that as worn as the spare sort of works .
Thanks for that.
It has an MOT soon , do the locks come into the MOT or can i wait to see if it is worth spending £75 on, as the car was only £100 in the first place ?.

locks as in do the doors lock are not part of the mot
so get a test first
(good thinking batman)

I bought a 2 year old escort in 1992. The car was steam cleaned by the dealer prior to me collecting it on a freezing day on 29th December 1992.and three out of the four doors were frozen shut, only to be forced open in front of us by the salesman by shoving with his shoulder from inside. Locks were dodgy and later changed FOC by the main dealer I got the car from. Two years later they were all playing up again and Ford wanted £200 for a set of barrels. (Before the days of ebay!) I contacted Ford who told me that two years was a reasonable life for a lock. I was so disgusted I traded the car for a new Pug 306 a week later.
The old saying of 'any Ford key will fit any Ford' didn't apply in my case as my OWN key would even open my OWN car !
The only way I could open the boot was to :
Insert the key fully and the in a clockwise circular motion, rotate the fob whilst also trying to turn the key clockwise as if trying to unlock the door/tailgate. Sounds wacky but it worked for me.
Good luck,
Stuart

IIRC any Tibbe (I think thats what they call them) ford key will lock any Ford, but not unlock it (obviously). So OP should be able to lock the car with any other key, if not then the locks are worn out.

quite right, but the keys are made of mastic so its 50/50 lock or key
the last of the mk 3 fiestas used to have worn out ignition barrels at 30,000 miles, beat that

Correct.
It's caused some heart stopping moments owning two Tibbe lock equipped Fords, with one only having one key. Have come so close on many occasions!!
Cheers

Try a new key first, that is your cheapest option.
If you're going to replace the locks yourself try www.gbmparts.co.uk , and ask them to build the lock up for you.

If only the ignition and the fuel cap work, then presumably the drivers door, passenger door and the boot are all a problem. Like I said in my first post it will most likely a worn key rather than three worn barrels. Got a new key cut and it will most likely be right as rain.
