Firstly, sorry for two entries - thought it easier to do one problem per post.
Anyway, my Mondeo (done 75k) has a whine from about 30-60mph (after which it's probably still there but can't be heard). It is constant with speed not gear/engine revs.
Noise is worst when keeping a steady speed (ie just enough power to keep up). Less whine when under acceleration and almost no noise when off the gas or braking.
Have had wheel bearings checked - seem OK. Garage is going to check the gearbox oil this week. Browsing through other forums have seen differential noise and tyre noise suggested.
I appreciate it's difficult to judge a noise without hearing it, but any thoughts welcome.
Cheers
Gary

I've had a couple of mondeo's suffer with wheel bearings (inc my current motor) - does the noise change with steering input either way?

Another vote for diff. here

I'm no expert but this is what I think.
It sounds like diff noise. I think there's no point fixing it until it gets much worse, because to fix it - you change the diff. Unless you have money to burn and want it done now.

It could be the intermediate drive shaft bearing bolted to the back of the engine, this bearing supports the longer offside driveshaft. When it gets bad the car will judder slightly on hard acceleration.

Souds like your diff.....my C5 is just the same. Been like it for the last 45K. Just ignore it.
