Daihatsu Charade 1.3 LXi 99 on V reg, 70k. Its the base model so no elec windows etc but it does have air con which was optional, so its a strange spec anyway.

Its at a Daihatsu dealer up for £1990

Sounds like really strong money to me? Problem is, it doesnt appear in any price guides that I can see, possibly because sales were tiny by that point as it was on its way out, but it makes it hard to judge. I thought perhaps £1500 was closer to reality?

Any clues much appreciated.

Hang on!

An eight year old car, the new equivalent of which would be circa £8,000-ish? Let's say it halved in value in the first 2 years, then halved again in the next 2, and so on. That makes it £500.

Which was about the figure I first thought of. At this age however, it's more condition than 'book price' that matters.

Well I did think that and condition in this case is almost mint, just that they have a Seicento Sporting aswell with just 36k on an X plate for £1800 which just makes it look rather pricey as they were much the same price when new.

says you can buy a 200 year with 46k miles for less.

I suggest always consulting Autotrader before buying any car: gives you a real world view of prices imo.

I see there's a Ford dealer selling a similar age/mileage to the one the OP saw.

So it seems the cost for a dealers valet and warranty on these little things is £1,490!

I'm not sure where you get £500 from.

If that's true, the £6000 base-spec 106s I keep seeing for about £900 at 10 years old are ridiculously overpriced.

With your maths, they're worth £187.50.

If its the one at Westaway its too much. There are others with lower mileage for a lot less on Autotrader.

In my experience, any presentable small car (106, Fiesta, Corsa, Clio, Polo, Saxo under 10-11 years old will sell easily for about a grand as long as it has a year's ticket and no obvious mechanical problems. If it has a good spec, you can add a good few hundred quid more. Depreciation levels off here until the car becomes tatty or hopelessly outdated.

They just appeal to so many people, whether it's yoof looking for something cheap to insure, families who want a second car for running about locally, or someone looking for an economical commuter to sit in a station car park all day.

The book told us last year we should have been able to buy the Fiesta we were after for £750. After three weeks of scouring the Trader and looking at some different examples, we were forced to conclude it was talking complete nonsense.

Cheers
