I find it incongrous to see that some papers refer to the police as 'cops'. Perhaps I mean disrespectful?
Is it just me?
|
>Is it just me?
No; but sadly its a long time since this country particularly concerned itself with the principles of respect.
But don't forget, a newspaper is merely a barometer. Unpopular newspapers which do not fit in with the culture and expectations of the potential audience rarely sell well.

Folks, just a quick request for you to remember when discussing this story, that the driver of the BMW was arrested following the accident. I'm not sure what happened after that (as in whether he was released, charged or bailed) but please err on the side of caution if you're going to discuss this one.
Thanks

The SUN plus culture and expectations of the potential audience! That'll be yoghurt and pregnant teenagers for a guess!

I assume they might hold evidence. Other than that, AFAIK - none.

>>What grounds do the police have for seizing cameras?
Welcome to England. Sickos photographing dead bodies with a view to passing them around, perhaps for cash. Disturbing for all and positively devastating for the nearest and dearest. Scumbags one and all.
But what do we care about ? "What grounds do the police have for seizing cameras?" !! Wouldn't you have stopped them or at least tried to ? If it was bad enough, wouldn't you have taken their cameras ? I would have done.
You'd better check the pictures to make sure that the nasty policemen had parked their cars properly as well.

Polo Girl-you're the only person to mention a BMW driver-all I said was that someone was helping police with their inquiries-no more than that!!

I was on my way to Bluewater on Saturday with my daughter when we hit traffic. Cursing our luck at being held up from our totally gratuitous and shallow exercise, we crawled along. We finally got there and had great fun, spending and eating without a care in the world.
Fast forward to this morning. My daughter is a teacher at a local school. Her teaching assistant hadn't arrived. Why? She was at home mourning the loss of her husband, the father of 4 of her children. He was one of those killed in the accident. He used to be my next door neighbour when I was a young man.
Puts it all into perspective doesn't it? Next time you get done for speeding, bad parking, lighting a fag whilst driving, running a red light....and you spend hours on here asking how you can get off with it, think back....put it all into context and thank God that you are alive, thank God that a "cop" is not knocking at your door to give the bad news.
(PS.....re how police have power to seize mobile phones? PACE Act allows police to seize anything which may be evidence, but does it all really matter?)

by the way, one of the motorcyclists is critically injured. He is the Brother of one of the deceased!

First Sunday of Spring, light nights and the sun was shining. Result bikers out in their droves - three of whom were killed in Yorkshire, two in the Dales one in East Yorkshire. I suspect some bikers are like caravanners - get their machines out after a few months of them being holed up, don't check anything on them and fail to adjust driving style from four to two wheels. Jump on and drive off with tragic results. Car drivers are no doubt guilty in forgetting about bikers until this time of year, I know I saw more yesterday than I have seen for months.

YES and MOST, not all, ride like pratts................and yes, I am a biker..off road still, but I know what is safe and what is stupid. Bikes, like cars have got so quick and brains have maintained their slow speed. Road surfaces are crap, etc etc etc.

too true......which is why if you've got any sense you ride with a bit left over.......just in case
5 years ago roughly, riding from Callington to Launceston in Cornwall, with my brother and a load of his mates, encountered a nasty double apex bend that was most deceiving....... one of those ones where you have to change your intended line a bit sharpish........I made it, but not without a chunk of the other carriageway........but the lad behind me didn't
he went off the road.....bike went up a tree growing out of the bank that dropped away and he went down a 30ft slope landing in a bluebell wood......very lucky chap......the Kawasaki ZXR7 (think that's what the model was..lurid green thing) wasn't so lucky
off duty police officer stopped and assisted and he stated he'd been to a fatal there 2 days previously where a car did the same but hit a lorry..... concentrates your mind a bit

I had a ZX7R, 2003 model, one of the last. a classic 750 superbike, superb handling though a bit no-compromise. I think there is a pic on ...... yes here:

As I have mentioned before, two years ago this summer a guy I met at the bike shop bugged me to buy it from me, I took his 97 ZRX1100 as part ex, didnt plan to keep it though it is a great bike, that's another story.
I stayed in touch with the guy peridically and last spoke to him last June, he still had the bike, last November I heard he had been killed riding a Kawasaki, I assume my old 7R, a car pulled out on him, mid thirties, kids .....
As you say it concentrates the mind a bit.

Perhaps, but the original post is where a truck crossed the central reservation. Hard to see how riding style or mechanical checks could have prevented that.
I really don't think this is an appropriate thread for the 'lunatic bikers' posts?
My condolences to their friends and family.

I had a near miss on my mini tour of South Wales a few weeks ago - a Junction on the M4 - just found it on LocalLive site, no junction no but the one near Gorseinon, which has A483 and the A48 around it. I was going down the wrong way and wanted to double back (no sat nav see !) I was travelling eastbound and came off at this junction intending to join the westbound lane.....rode accross the bridge and anticipating a straight slip road on failed to account for an eccentric kink in the road. Mind was full of being wrong, my head hurt through an ill-fititng helmet (now changed) and wanting to be somewhere else (sitting in a web-mates house drinking tea) - serious banking and braking (thank the Lord for ABS and linked brakes), any other factor like dampness or diesel I would have been off....focuses the mind !

my head hurt through an ill-fititng helmet (now changed)
Oh I've been there...Scotland to Warrington Lymm in agony. :o(
Damn you, Nitro.

>> my head hurt through an ill-fititng >> helmet (now changed) Oh I've been there...
ditto.......someone told me once to re-new the helmet regularly.......(good advice)....and.....to get one as tight as you could fit on your head, as it would give...(not so good advice)
drove with newly acquired helmet from Harrow to Devon.......had paid £200 quid for it........and at about Reading couldn't stand the pain any more, so had to undo all the lining and pull it all out.....which meant i was now riding with a helmet that made me look like Deputy Dawg and worse it was now so loose it was like having a bucket on your head..........what a nightmare
thought myself lucky to flog it to a mate for a 50% loss.........won't be doing that again

How often to renew it depends a lot on what it's made of. If it's polycarbonate, or ABS, it will need renewing much more often than a fibreglass one (dropping the lid negates this advice, of course!). It should be a comfortable fit, and not slop about on your head, nor be to tight. It's absolutely vital that there is sufficient clear area around your mouth and nose so that if you are in an accident there is room for "stuff" to drain away (a frequent reaction to a crash is to vomit - especially if unconcious, inhaling vomit can kill you). The helmet should also be properly secured, so it won't fly off if it (you!) hits something. It should be small (rotational effects are magnified with a bigger helmet), commensurate with proper cushioning. On a more mundane level, hearing protection is latterly (last 15 years?) strongly recommended - not so much because of the noise of the engine, as noise from "draughts".

"to get one as tight as you could fit on your head, as it would give...(not so good advice)"
That's the advice I followed and told by the seller (a very reputable dealer) that the lid would slaken with use - it didn't ! Just bought one of these Shoei Multitechs - brilliant, plenty of lughole space !

What with all the airbags, ABS, EPS, side impact, I'm suprised you needed a helmet. :-P

First Tuesday after BST starts - Bassets Pole will be busy, lots of bikes about.
The surprise was the one I followed from Lichfield to Rugeley, I really was dawdling as SWMBO's car goes on the drive before mine and she was 5 minutes behind me. The biker did not gain on me at all - and it wasn't a small bike or a learner. Was refreshing to see that they are not all lunatics.
I can understand them running on headlights but main beam is certainly inconsiderate. How would they feel if we all drove around on main beam?
