renault scenic - service light - outkast
My wifes scenic 1.5 diesel has done 15000 miles,at about 12000 miles the service warning light came on and the message "service, change oil" shows on the dash.
the dealer where the car was bought says the service interval is 18000 or one year.
Who knows best, the dealer or the car?

I'd be inclined to believe the car over the dealer and if they won't service it find another that will. Mind you, I wouldn't leave it until 12000 miles to change the oil, never mind 18000 anyway.

Could be variable service schedule that takes into account the number of times the car is started from cold, average speed etc. Maximum interval is 18000 under ideal conditions, it's lunacy to leave the oil in for more than 12000 miles, even if the oil is fully synthetic and doesn't break down it will be heavily contaminated with soot and metal particles.

Renaults dont have variable servicing. The "service now" just counts 18k miles from the last time it was reset. It seems to be screwed.

Actually the service interval for our Modus 1.5 DCi is 12K and not 18K. 18K is for petrol engined cars so I would suggest your car has informed you correctly.

18k is the service interval for 1.9 diesel cars as well. Its not just a petrol thing. So the car could be right and the dealer is getting his engines mixed up.

I think you will find that the Euro3 engines are on 18k mile interval and the newer Euro4 engines on 12k miles interval.

Have you inadvertently set the computer wrongly ,you can reset the service to stop it annoying it tells you in the handbook.

If the light is on, I'd say get it done. Better to be safe than sorry. Cars dont normally lie!

Well thanks for your answers,I must say I agree with you and now armed with your replies I'll show the missus, perhaps now she will listen too me!!!
Ive never gone more than 8k without an oil change, but with a new car warranty its got to be done by a garage i think or the warranty is invalid i think?
Am I correct in thinking the car can be taken to any reputable service centre, not just renault without invalidating the warranty?

HI if the car is still under warranty then i would take it to renault. but i do know that a good garage can do this. as long as they use renualt parts but i think they would have to ask renault to make shore that it would not afect the warranty. this can be a bit of a black spot because some will say yes and some will say no. its just a case of asking but you will have to think what if somthing goes wrong? hope this helps
