well its hard to tell if its just one cylinder, once you start her she's ok for a few seconds and then start missing for the first once every 5 seconds and then eratically, she drives like she's got a stutter no cat fitted and its a 2E3 carb.

If this is a fueling problem the miss will be erratic. If it is one pot what's a different story. Place a piece of rag over the end of the exhast and tie a peice of string round it when she is missing and leave a 2 cm of slack material to allow it to 'pop in and out, now observe, this may well tell you if it is regular or random. If that fails and assuming you want to fix this yourself then here is an offer. Use a lap top of a cable from your PC and place the mike 10cm away and 10cm oot of the main air flow from the exhaust and record a sound file for 20 seconds. If you take this opetion and do know how to analyse the data come back to the site and I'l give you an email address to send the file to and i'll take a look. Check the earth strap form the carb to the body as this is the return for the choke thermal heater unit which you should check is working. Regards Peter

When it's missing; push down on the airbox and see if that makes a difference. These have been known to split the carb mounting.

Spot on Screwloose, a common problem. Regards Peter

sorry for the long reply , got sent to hospital, anyway i removed the vacuum pipe that goes into the vacuum advance unit and it was still missing but not nearly as bad. does that mean the vacuum advance units a gonner????>>
If that happens sounds like it's running too rich and the extra air by passing the carb is improving matters ?....are the plugs sooty?.choke should be closed fully at cold start and open slightly when the engine starts. If it missfires hot and the choke is open fully the carb probably wants cleaning and setting up

I once had a bizarre misfire on a Polo 1.3 Coupe S which may be the same engine; was slowly losing water and misfiring like crazy; all the symptoms of a head-gasket failure, but actually turned out to be a virtually invisible pinhole leak of the top radiator hose spraying an ultra-fine mist onto the distributor cap... Quick and easy for you to check, at least...
