Anyone have any ideas what it could be? Linked I think! Lenny

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck open.

Cheers Dave. Any ideas on how to fix it? Lenny

Its quite easy to do but a garage should be able to do it for £25 inc labour and VAT. The part should be £6 and its a 15 minute job.

if its a tdci then a genuine Ford part was £43 if I remember correctly.

A pattern part at £13 didn't work properly, took forever to warm up.

Its also possible that its the waterpump that's gone, common occurance see my recent thread on my failure.

Almost certainly a failed thermostat. If it's the same as my TD, follow the fat radiator hose from the right hand side (as you stand in front of the car) of the radiator back towards the engine. There's an aluminium housing that this hose goes into. That's the thermostat housing.

The procedure will be something along these lines:

Disconnect the hose (coolant will escape), undo the mounting bolts around the circumference of the housing cover, and ease the cover off. Note which way around the old stat is fitted and pull it out along with its sealing ring. Gently clean the mounting faces on both the engine and the thermostat housing, fit the new sealing ring to the new stat and pop the new stat in the same way as the old one came out. Locate the cover back in place, refit the bolts, tighten them evenly and reconnect the hose. Top up and bleed the cooling system.

If it takes any more than 20 minutes start to finish, something has gone badly wrong. While you're at it, I would take the opportunity to completely drain and renew the coolant unless it's been recently done.

Cheers

Ohrighty Dave thanks for the advice. I did everything you stated and it worked fine. However, the gasket in the kit wasnt the correct one so I had to cut one out of the universal one that was enclosed. Tightened the housing up, topped it up with coolant and it started leaking from the housing so I tightened and tightened in the hope this would stop it anyway, the top bolt sheared so now Im off to the garage on Friday to get it retapped ! Im hopeless but thanks for your help anyway. Lenny

Well as it turned out, the reason why the housing was leaking was the rubber oring seal that goes around the edge of the top of the stat wasnt the right one that came in the kit. The garage used the ring from the old stat. It turns out that the stat should not sit flush, but slightly proud. Anyway to remove the bolt and refir the housing and top up with coolant cost me £44. It was as simple as that. Anyway, the heaters are still blowing cold but the temp guage is normal. WHat else could this be? Anyone have any firther suggestions? Lenny

Lenny,

This suggests coolant is not circulating through the heater matrix, either due to a blockage or due to an airlock formed when the system was refilled.

An easy first attempt would be to set the heater control to its hottest setting, remove the expansion tank cap (carefully if the engine is anything other than stone cold), and run the engine at 2,000 RPM until it warms up. This should help shift any trapped air back to the expansion tank.

IIRC, the heater matrix hoses are best accessed from under the car, but see if you can feel if they are getting warm at all.

Cheers

Thanks Dave, tried it today with no joy. Reckon it must be the Heater Matrix that is blocked. Dont suppose you know how to do this? Lenny
