It depends how far you want to go, and how much you want to spend. You can do the following (in order):
Wash it (obviously)
Use detailing clay to remove the bonded contaminants
Polish it (a gentle polish)
Wax to give it an extra bit of shine
If you want you can go a little further by using tyre gel/spray, plastic spray etc.
If the paint is just 'tired' and not damaged then this should bring it up better than new. The detailing clay may even be enough to bring it to the condition you want it.

Paint it pink.

Paint it pink.
And have the seats reupholstered with fake leopardskin fabric.

Neglect it a lot, and kick it around a bit. Then it'll look suitably Grundy.

Thanks for the replies. It has not been used as a working vehicle...nor will it be. I just need to get Defender ownership out of my system, much like I bought an Elise several years ago during my short lived MLC. Talk about polar opposites.
I reckon it will be out of my system within 6 months then I shall buy something sensible (a four year old Subaru) but in the meantime I want to look after it cosmetically. Mechanically it is sound....fingers xed....what is detailing clay?....never heard of it. Maybe if we get a bright sunny day here in North Yorks I shall get the above done. Henry Hoover is ready and waiting....

omg, he's actually going to polish a Landie!
I'm off for a lie down ...

Why look after it cosmetically? The body panels are aluminium aren't they? Its the steel mounting points you can't see that are potentially troublesome: electrolytic corrosion. Amongst other things. www.channel6.dk/Rover/uk/Page15.htm

This explains what detailing clay is.

Don't polish, or wax your car in direct sunlight. Washing your car in direct sunlight isn't great either.

OMG! A whole forum on washing and detailing cars. I will stay hidden on here and only wash the car when I no longer have an excuse not to.
