After four main dealer services when the car has been filled with 10W/30, this time the dealer has used Castrol 5W/30 Longlife III on my 2.0ltr 8V Petrol Passat.
Just wondered if this is wrong and why they would suddenly change. What do I top it up with? Can I use the 10W/30 Halfords Oil that I recently bought?
|
Sorry it was 10W/40 that they have used in the past not 10W/30.
|
What age is the passat? And I guess it is a petrol one?
|
Yes I can see it is petrol from the title....!
But the oil required is dependent upon age, the following link may help, and then click on 'Which oil should I use' on the left hand side

Sorry Ian
It's a 2002 SE Petrol.
|
From that I think (it's not totally clear) that it should be 5W/30.
So have they been putting the wrong oil in it for over four years?
|
What does the driver's manual say??
|
VW Manual states:
Multi Grade High Lubricity oils - specification VW 500 00 or VW 502 00
High Lubricity oils VW 501 01
Castrol SLX Longlife III Silver Container that they've used states:
Volkswagen recommends Castrol
SAE 5W-30, VW 504 00/507 00
Which in my book means that they've put the wrong oil in it!

Can you safely mix 5W/30 and 10W/40?
I have only just bought 5ltrs of Halfords 10W/40 following a recommendation on this board!!

Rang the VW dealer today and they told me that they have had a directive from VW to use longlife oil.

The oil standard VW504 quoted meets all the old standards: pics.tdiclub.com/data/3009/3093TitanGTI15w-30.jpg
