KA erratic idling - razor rudd
Hi guys.
I am having trouble with erratic idling on a W reg Ford KA. The idling will go up and down in a consistant rythum for about 9 beats then settle down.
After having a mobile diagnostics it was deemed that the idle control valve was the most likely culprit, even though error readings were not found.
I replaced the valve and a slight difference was achieved. On start up the idling was non erratic but steady and slowly depreciating in revs as the car warmed up. after a few miles the car resumed its erratic idling at all junctions. sometimes the revs will go higher, around 3,000 aprox, and will go back to normal after a slight knock on the accelerator.
The question is, has any body had this experience or any idea what could be causing it. I am leaving a trip to fords as a last resort. grateful for any help. thanks.

Idle issues have afflicted many of the smaller Fords for years. They're often concerned with the ECU not realizing that the throttle is shut and the idle stability program should commence.

There are many and various "fixes" listed by Ford for "idle flare" and other idle-related maladies. It's not helped by this car being built around 2000; there are no less than 15 different versions of the engine management system listed for that particular year. Some are MAF controlled; others MAP. The various fixes are not applicable to all. An engine code [anything from A9A to JJL] would help.

Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor and briefly try it. You'll have no speedo, but if it cures the idle problem, then you'll know what's at the root of it. Then comes the matter of deciding which of the many reasons for the ECU not reading the TPS signal voltage correctly is your one.

Thanks for your speedy replyI just got to page 28 looking for similiar probs, didn't find one yet!
Would you know if the ECU can be cleared by just removing engine management fuses? or do I have to do something more extreme?

You can reset the ECU to base values by removing the appropriate fuse for a few minutes. This will reset the ratch voltage for the idle stored in the ECU and may temporarily improve things until it re-learns. It won't tell you anything useful.

All 1.3 Ka would have an engine code starting with "J" and all Ka are MAF not MAP.

My girlfriends W reg Ka suffers from exactly the same problem. There is no misfire or anything but it idles stupidly in traffic.

My dads Escort suffered from it and simply cleaning the idle valve cured it.

All Ka's are 1.3; most - but not all - of their engine codes start with a "J" - and some do have MAP-controlled systems.

I had one last year; the MAF had been replaced with a factory-fitted blank tube. IIRC the ECU code may have been "SHAY." Caused a bit of head-scratching in the parts dept.

I had the same problem with my girlfriends 1.3 Endura-E fiesta engine (same engine as the KA).
I replaced the ICV and tried the resetting of the ECu by removal of the fuse all with no sucess.
The problem was tracked back to incorrect Valve clearences and upon setting the clearences correctly the problem was cured and never returned. Maybe worth a go and is an easy task to carry out.

Sportka and Streetka are 1.6.If it has a 1.3 fitted the engine code will start with "J"There are different types of MAF but MAP went out with CFI.

Screwloose,A ll Ka are MAP not MAF as you say-I had an abberation.CFI were fitted with a large bulkhead mounted MAP while on the KA it is a small unit mounted directly on the manifold.

I thought throttle body wear caused these symptoms on this engine.

Thanks Guys, I am overwhelmed by your support!
I will add that it has just had an Ivor Searl replacement engine put in, but the problem was occuring before this. I would have thought the Valves would be adjusted to a correct tolerance. What is throttle body wear and what would a resolution/ cost entail?
