my mk2 golf e-reg cuts off in fraffic it happened twice in the past month can anyone help, also smoke starts to come from the heaters. and fuel pump makes noises
mk2 golf gti 8v problems - vwgolfmaz
sorry i think i need to give a few more details

my E reg mk2 golf gti 8v cut off in traffic, and revs go high and low in the cold but not sure if this will happen in the hot weather. it sometimes feels like its losing power and i have to keep reving, at no point it cut off even when a gave gas to the pedel, and when i tried restarting it it didnt start, the car is modified with fast racing cams done by previous owner, but sure sure if this is the reason for the problem.

the fuel pump is making buzzin noises which im gettin done for £100 from local garage, he also had a look at the heaters and said the heater matrix is leaking, as for the cut off, he said its hard to workout the problem as car was running fine when i showed him it.

the heaters give out smoke with a toxic like smell and the windows are always steamy.

can someone please help me as i would like to keep the car as its nicely lowered with alloys, leathers and PAS conversion

The easy one is the "smoke" from the heater. This is engine coolant leaking from the heater matrix or one of the hoses supplying it. The toxic smell is the antifreeze in the coolant.

If you haven't checked the level of coolant in the system for a while then you are not far from a siezed up engine.

If the coolant level has been too low for too long you may have a damaged headgasket or worse.

If the engine has been modified with "fast racing cams" then I would expect it to tick over at a couple of thousand RPM and sound like a bucket of nails. I would not expect the engine to pull cleanly until it was well up the rev band.

Has it got fuel injection? If so, what sort(continuous/pulsed)?.

If it has modified cams was the fuel system adapted to suit?

Has it got total engine management or a separate ignition control system?

How long have you had it?

Did the person you bought it from modify it, and if so have they details of what was done? (you cannot usually just fit "racing cams" without extra work on manifolds etc.)

This is not a personal attack but you will have to post accurate details in a clear manner on a technical forum to avoid misleading people.

E reg Golf 8 valve GTI pretty sure its one of the Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection systems on these.

E reg Golf 8 valve GTI pretty sure its one of
the Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection systems on these.

1988 is a change over year Lee, could be K-jet or Digifant

I suggest you get the faults fixed that you know of first and see if this helps with the cutting out.

2 fuel pumps on this car, it sounds like the in tank lift pump has failed and the main pump is scavenging fuel through it.

Blown heater matrix could be due to HG failure anyway and needs checking before it damages the new matrix

thanks dox, the fuel pump should be done soon. Im not sure about kjet or Digifant thats what europarts asked me when i called them. What is the HG, how can it be checked? please help

hi mjm, thanks for your reply

i have had the car since 1st Dec 2006, the owner said its had its mainfold changed alone with the racing cams, the car does not tick or sound like a bucket of nails, but the engine does roar abit like a VR6 but this could be because it has a drilled air box airfilter.

as for pulling cleanly, i know for sure its not faster than a standard mk2 8v, gears lasting longer im not sure.

the person i bought it from said he done all the work himself, he did say it overheated in the past so he changed the Radiator. he sold it to me saying it needed abit of TLC.

and the engine did siezed up at one point, im also not sure if it has fuel injection i will ask someone about that.
so do u think the car cutting off in traffic is sometime got to do with the heaters?

The first thing you have to do, as a matter of urgency, is get the cooling system sorted out. (change the heater matrix) Until you have done this you will have no chance of getting anything else sorted out and every chance of destroying the engine. If you use a garage to sort out the leaking cooling system they will be able to check for head gasket failure at the same time. If you do it yourself, then do a forum search for ways to check the head gasket. There is loads of information in here.
When the cooling system is sorted and head gasket checked (and repaired if necessary) then the rest of the problems can be tackled in a logical manner.

You will have fuel injection on the car, try doing a google search on it.

thanks mjm, i just called up the garage he has comfirmed it is a fuel injection, i also told him to check the head gasket, fingers cross.

Aside from the heater matrix problem, as Dox has said there are 2 fuel pumps on this car and the lift pump in the tank often fails (well at 100,000+ miles!) and this pump is much cheaper than the main one which is £100+, so worth checking that one first.

have another problem now, i have rallye half leather seats, it dont go back and forward, when i brake it slides forward, when i step on the gas it slides back and is very dangerous, i took it to a garage there is a spring missing, not sure were to get the spring from is were anythink i can do...
mk2 golf gti 8v problems - George Porge
If you lift up at the seat base does the seat then lock into position?
mk2 golf gti 8v problems - steveo3002
theres a small spring on the ajuster lever under the seat...makes the locking pin snap into place..

find one at a scrap yard or get the dealer to order one....and small spring will do , but im not sure where you would find a selection?
mk2 golf gti 8v problems - vwgolfmaz
cheers guys, got the seat sorted, cost me £45 all in
mk2 golf gti 8v problems - steveo3002
£45 !!!!!!!!!! a spring shouldve been nearer 45 pence

Its what comes of buying someone elses "project" when you don't know how to complete the left over jobs yourself.

The thin end of the wedge I'd say :O(
