Hi, I've been directed to Honest John from another forum as I'm trying to find someone in Southport who can fix my car and do a good job for reasonable money.
To cut a long story short, I have a Nissan Primera worth at best £2000 which needs new tyres, brake discs and brake pads all round plus an O/S CV Boot. Nissan want silly money to fit them as do most national companies. I'm not a Southport local so don't know who is good or bad so can someone please recommend a small, friendly and cheap place to fix my faithful old car? Someone that could supply the brakes & CV Boot as well as fit them would be good, the tyres I can get from blackcircles.co.uk no problem..
All help gratefully received.

There WAS a dealer in Eastbank Street, on the left wen you are Southbound and before the railway bridge, called Reg Thompson. I had 3 cars from him and he is/was the sort of man who would have contacts with the sort of servicing that you are asking about. I know Stockport is Not Southport but I cam across these in HJ's list of recommended garages
Stockport
Chris or Ben, Tenby Garage, Lavenders Brow, Churchgate, Stockport, Cheshire SK1 1YW, tel: 0161 480 5075.
The Dave Arnitt Citroen Repair Centre, Arthur Street, Reddish, Stockport SK6 1PE, tel: 0161 432 0636. (Citroen specialist.)
The General Motor Co. Ltd, Cooke Street, Hazel Grove, Stockport SK7 4EG, tel: 0161 483 3883. (Independent Audi/VW specialists.)
Ryland Honda, 35 Buxton Road, Stockport SK2 6LZ, tel: 0161 480 4244. (Very helpful and efficient, even in sourcing parts for grey-imported Hondas.)

The dealership that was based at the Reg Thompson outlet (Reg was a well known Rolls Royce engineer) used to be run by a friend of mine.
I've bought several cars off him, including my current VW Bora, but he has now given up the Eastbank Street/Bridge Street outlet and works from home.
His name is Dave White and he can be contacted on 01704-225789. Dave is one of those rarities - a straightforward and very honest dealer who offers some excellent cars, including used BMWs.
On the question of the work required, a small independent garage I use for my MOT annually has a deserved reputation for good workmanship and reasonable prices.
It's Norman Yates in Hart Street, Southport, and the number is: 01704-541446.

Stuart, thanks for politely correcting my post. I haven't been in Southport for 15 years! I now recall that Dave White ran the dealership on behalf of Reg Thompson's widow. He (Dave) was a top bloke and straight as a die; he had a good collection of low to med priced cars and the occasional oddball or rarity. Any mechanic he uses or puts anyone onto will be good IMHO.

Thanks for the replies, I'll give Norman Yates a call tomorrow. Anyone come across Spencer & Gilbert? They've been recommended by someone I know.

Dave still is a top bloke - I'll probably be enjoying a drink with him later tonight...:-)

Please tell him Nick Ireland remembers him. Chrome bumper MGB-GT and a Sierra Saphire bought from him. I used to live in the Homeless Hostel in Duke Street but that is another story!

Ryland Honda ain't there any more. Its an ATS tyre place now. Arnold Clark got the Honda franchise and I have heard varying reports on their customer service.

Arnold Clark do not have the Honda franchise, it's Lookers Honda. I bought my Accord from them and to date I have been more than satisfied.

Are we talking about the same dealer Robbie? Arnold Clark Honda is on the A6 in Stockport, near the college. Lookers are all on St Mary's Way (and don't sell on Honda, at least in Stockport anyway).

SOUTHPORT IS NOT STOCKPORT!!!
Oh come on, don't be so picky. They are both in the north aren't they?

Ooh, I was sorely tempted by the "Report this message as offensive" button! : D

Spencer & Gilbert are okay - I've had cars MOT'd there in the past. Norman Yates is first class, as is Walmayne Motors on Linaker Street, at the junction with Southbank Road. Dave is a top guy who although is always rushed off his feet will always do his best for you. 0704 501642.

Lookers Honda in Southport is actually just outside the town's boundary in Southport Road, Scarisbrick, Lancashire (just a couple of minutes' driving past Kew roundabout - Halliwell Jones has a BMW outlet a few yards further on).

Blimey Stuartli, I think the OP just wants recommendations, not detailed geography of Southport and the surrounding area!

Perhaps you should read the original thread a little more closely...:-)

Obviously not. The town is Southport.
