The heater blower on my Mk5 Escort Estate for some unknown reason has stopped working. The fuse is okay, I picked up another blower at the scrap yard, swopped it over but still no luck. Thought it might be the switch - swapped that over but still no sign of life. Connecting the blower directly to the battery and it springs into life.
Any advice on what to look at next? Its getting pretty cold just now.

Sounds like a loose connection in the wiring. Have you got a circuit diagram so you can trace it?
|
I would guess it is the old problem of a fault in the fuse box.Dry solder joints on the circuit board.Try powering the fan circuit fuse from a known good supply.

Does it work on the highest speed setting, or not at all? If the former, then more than likely the resistor pack has failed.
|
It dosen't work on any of the 3 settings I'm afraid.
I've just had a look at the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual and from what I can tell - there's one supply from the fuse to the switch then 3 supplies from the switch, through the fuse box and on to the blower. My plan for tomorrow was to see if there's a live from the fuse to the switch.

Today the wipers, indicators, electric windows all stopped working.
I reckon for all this to happen at once - the fuse box is goosed.
Won't be able to visit my local scrappies until next weekend at the earliest and I'm hoping diesel and petrol fuse boxes are the same.

There are a couple of connections which are bolted into the underside of the fuse box - if you stick your head in the footwell, and look up, you will see them.
If you find them loose, take the earth lead off the battery before touching these connections with any tools - one of the connectors at least is live all the time, and at that point, un-fused.

They're far from identical; the part number is on the front of the box. Only get one exactly the same.
Or pop your box open and see if the failed solder joint is one of the accessible ones. 4 out of 5 chance it is.

New fuse box fitted - now everything appears to be working apart from the engine!!!! Looks like the immobiliser has kicked in. Nothing when you turn the key and the flashing light next to the clock isn't doing anything.
Any ideas on how to reset the immobiliser?

Was it an identically part numbered box? Do the dash warning lights [battery oil etc.] come on?
Have you replaced that single [alarm] fuse on the relay plate? Could you have refitted a blown fuse somewhere?
|
The fuse box has the same number on it.
All the dash lights come on as they should but when you turn the key - there's just nothing at all, not even a click.
I removed the new fuse box and refitted the old one - turned the key and it started!!!
Swapped them back over and again - nothing.
The single 20amp fuse is fitted on top of the relay plate.

Looks like you've lost the feed to the PATS. Check all the fuses in the new box; particularly 7; 11; 13; 14; 16; 32 and 33. There's an astonishing number of variations in fusebox layout for a mundane car and it's possible that this new box isn't wired for PATS.
You might just have a cracked fuse; turn the ignition on and check that every fuse that's live at one end is also live at the other. Quite a quick task with ATO fuses - if you've got a pointed test lamp.
