Xantia heater - XF8U
The air blows luke warm even when the engine has warmed up. Why?

Also, during running on the motorway the temperature guage reads a steady 70 degrees. Is this normal. I always thought the needle ought to be in the middle i.e. 80 degrees

When I slow down or stop the needle creeps up, and then goes down to 70 at speed. Could this be a thermostat issue?

Thanks in advance
Mike

there was a post on this very recently, lin last couple of weeks, maybe do a search.

What engine is in it? 70 is really too cool - however mine runs at that (result of putting sealant in the cooling system to seal up the leaky matrix probably!) and there is no problem with the amount of heat from the heater. Does it have climate control - the temp sensor can play up and cause havoc. If it#'s an older car the matrix may just be gunged up - which is probably a good thing, as it will be stopping it leaking :-))

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Oh, and the fan does not work in the AUTO position.

I was thinking about putting in some of that radiator flush and cleaner. That might help.

As a cheaper alternative, might a few drops of Fairy liquid in the water help to unblock the matrix?

Don't do that rad flush may help but sounds more like the thermostat has stuck open.

As it has climate, it will have a pollen filter - try taking this out first (remove the carpet under the dash on the passenger side, then remove the three screws on a 8" long cover and pull the filter out). See if that makes a difference. Does it get hot if you put the temp slider all the way to the right?

I had the same problem with a number of my cars, after around 8 years the thermostat really needs replacing. Because the heater isn?t very effective and the engine doesn?t hold it?s working temperate when travelling over 20 miles an hour. Normally after the thermostat is replaced everything was fine and toasty.

If it?s as difficult to replace the heater matrix on the Xantia as it is on the 306 you would be wise not to flush the cooling system. As said in a pervious post the thing could start leaking.

Try replacing the thermostat before anything else and see if that solves it. Heater matrices on these cars aren't exactly renowned for their longevity and are an absolute pain in the proverbial to replace (whole dash out job and hence plenty of scraped knuckles and expletives). An 11 year old Xantia doesn't justify major expenditure, so even if the matrix was leaking, best bet is to chuck some radweld in and run it to the ground.
