1998 1.8 mondeo. when firing central locking, all doors open apart from front passenger side. when trying to lock car, no doors lock unless using key in lock on passenger door. the problem is not constant and sometimes the central locking does function correctly, but when it goes wrong it is always the front passenger door that plays up.

Usually because it's not used frequently enough;there was a fix on Escorts and Fiestas where a stronger centralizing spring was fitted to the lock assy. to make sure it went righ back into the central position. It used to trigger the alarm if the car had one fitted and the lock was not completely in the right position. There was a service letter out on it.

Those locks get wet and seize. Also check the door loom plug for water ingress/corrosion.

My '97 Mondeo has exactly the same problem. I gave it a liberal squirt of WD40 through the keyhole and doorlock (more hope than science!) - it gradually improved and it now works 9 times out of ten. It's just one of those (dozens of) little things that you have to learn to live with on an aging Mondeo.
BTW, there have been previous posts on the topic which may come up in a 'forum search'..

I had the very same problem on a p reg 1.8 mondeo I owned. I got told and done this...
Take off the passengers inside door so you can see the lock etc. Spray wd40 over it all. Give it a gentle to firm whack with a rubber mallet a few times. (dont wellie it one though) .
I done and it solved the problem. Something to do with the mechanism stiffening up.

Unfortunately I couldn't work out how to take off the door inner panel - hence the liberal spraying of WD40. It's possible that my lock was just starting to sieze and I just caught it before any force became necessary.
