Daily commute M6 J15 to M5 J2 (not M6J1) - cottontop
Hi all,

Job has come up at work but its would involve driving to Oldbury, Birmingham every day from Stoke. Can anyone tell me what that stretch of road is like ?

I do have the option of getting the train from Stoke but its prohibitively expensive. Another option would be to nip down to Stafford (on the A34) and get the train from there (a lot lot cheaper and I play golf in that area so its handy).

Ive used the M6 tons of times but never really in the rush hour (s)....and the thought of putting my 96 TD Golf Estate through 500 miles a week seems a bit harsh !!

Any thoughts ??

Thanks

Richard

If you have a choice take early retirement - seriously it's a nightmare - from 7-9 chocka -- 5-7 chocka - and there are no easy bypass's to it. - sooner you than me.
If you have the chance just do the trip one morning to get to your place of work at start time and see how it goes before you accept job.

One longs to say, like the apocryphal Irishman, 'Don't start from Stoke'.... Seriously I'd say the Stafford option makes sense. Maybe your company would let you have a season ticket loan for Stafford to Oldbury?

Take the train from stafford. The a34 to stafford is rather busy though. There have been mutterings in the local paper about upgrading stoke station so that it is actually any use and maybe even adding parking. Parking at stafford will be problematic.

If your new workplace are flexible then I would suggest leaving stoke at 9 and getting to work later and leaving later if you wanted to commute by road. A friend of mine used to commute from Stoke to the centre of Brum everyday. It was a nightmare but curiously less bother than commuting by train as at least his car usually arrived on time and wasn't cancelled for no reason....

Perhaps a car share with someone else also doing a similar commute might be a good option. You can then share the driving and only hammer the cars half as much!

I'd like to know where they would add parking at Stoke station !! If I drove to Stafford I wouldn't park at the station as its £6. Theres a council car park a coupl eof minutes walk and its £30 a month.

Cheers

From experience - I live in Rugeley and work near the airport and I don't go that way often. . . .

If I hit the M6 Jn 11 at about 7 the queue starts between the services and M54 entry slip road. Eases a little after Jn 10 wallsall) and is normally doing around 40 at the M5 exit. It does move slowly and I can still get to work at 7:30 (Normal route is A51/A38/A446)

Don't go at 0900 - the queues are far worse - starts at Jn 11 and it moves slower.

If I hit it at 6:15 I can go all the way through at 40 (I do this when going to our Bristol office)

It is worse coming back - I frequently jump the M5/M6 queue (might regret advertising this) by taking M6 South sliproad and going round the A34 Junction (no give ways, no lane changes) and back up the M6 north.

There are few viable diversion routes and these times are based on no accidents.

It is worse than normal at the moment because there are road works on the M6 to M5 Slip road
