Is there a spray on foam or something which will dissolve the oil in a way that it can then be washed off with a hose pipe or pressure washer (I would remove the plug leads and protect the dizzy cap etc).
How effective is the method you are going to suggest?

I've used Gunk engine degreaser before with good results. Comes in aerosol for spray on, or as a liquid for brush on. The aerosol seems to work pretty well - not tried the liquid.
Spray on, use a stiff bristled brush to work it into the oil, leave it for a minute or so, then rinse with a hose or watering can.
Cheers

AutoGlym Engine & Machine Cleaner works well. It's in a spray bottle. I would be reluctant to use a pressure washer in the engine bay, even if you think the electrics are protected, but I suppose it's OK with great care. Decorators' angled brushes as useful for getting to awkward places.

Use truckwash. Make sure you get ALL of if off., you'll need a pressure washer to achieve this.
Be very very careful where you point a pressure washer within the engine bay

Just an observation, which I know won't help horatio at all. These days engines don't generally need a serious clean like they used to, thank goodness. At one time oil used to leak out all over. I think the breakthrough occurred in the late 1970s. Unless you know different ............... ! ;-)

Last time I had a problem with an oil leak, I used Fairy Power spray and the hose on the hot tap, it was brilliant and economical.

Put a sandwich bag over the brake fluid reservoir.

Thanks for all your replies, "fairy" must be the cheapest solution so far suggested, I'll have a look for that stuff next time I'm in a supermarket.

Do no use an engine degreaser over tarmac, it can dissolve the tar.
