Hello everyone,
My 1995 petrol Passat has become very difficult to start from stone cold.
Crank and crank then a cough and nothing. Again and again. Eventually it starts, runs rough, and is then fine.
When warm it starts fine.
Have replaced the water temp sensor. But this has not cured it.
Any thoughts out there?
I am thinking of replacing the coil next.
Thanks for any tips.
- Steve.

Measure the resistance of the HT leads and the King Lead. Buy the car some new plugs dizzy cap and rotar arm. Come back with the resistance values. Regards Peter

Hello Peter,
What tool do I need to measure resistance?
Sadly, I am very ignorant in relation to electrics.
But I fancy having a go myself.

A multi meter they usually measure volts, amps and ohms. Sounds like you do not have one. Regards Peter

I did not buy a multi-meter.
Replaced the HT leads, rotor, and distributor cap.
Seems to be running great!
The old rotor was knackered.
Also went mad and replaced the wiper blades!
Thanks for your suggestions.
P.S. How long do plugs last nowadays? Mine are one year/10,000 miles old.
Took them out and they looked fine. But how do people gap them? They had three electrodes!
As you may have guessed, my car knowledge is based on Morris Minors and Triumph Heralds...

Glad to hear it, your welcome. No gapping required and 20K 2 years like on many of these But I always take plugs out annual, clean threads and replace. If a Ka then every service, out with the plugs and at least annually. Regards Peter
