Hi i have a 2001 406 estate, The problem is with the fuel guage. It behaves very eraticly, basicly it just does what it likes from telling me theres nothing in it then its three quarters full.I have been told that the prob can sometimes be solved by having the BSI reset, how would i get this done (if i can).Everything else seems o.k just wondered if anyone else had had the same prob and if so if they found a fix .Thanks in advance for any help, cheers.

In the past i have checked a fuel gauge by putting the live feed off the sender to earth and watching the gauge, if it goes over a nice even sweep to full without stoping all is ok? if goes over and splutters about then a new gauge is req? not sure what you mean by a bsi reset but am intersested to learn!!

BSI is the Built in Systems Interface or the brain that controls everything electrical on a PSA car / van with the multiplex / CAN system, its software driven.
Thanks leepower learnt another new thing this week!!
The multiplexed 406s run a pretty basic CAN system because it was one of the first that PSA came out with.
Just disconnecting the battery for a few minutes will reset or reboot the system when you reconnect the battery.
Be warned though that sometimes on the multiplexed 406 the remote keyfobs will need reprograming after battery disconnection & depending on how the BSI unit feels at the time it might not let you do this by following the instructions in the owners handbook & you would then end up at a Pug dealer.
At least theres no radio code to worry about.
So the first thing to try is to disconnect the battery for a whilw and see what happens.Well it the easiest to start with.If the key goes belly up its cheaper than getting a dealer to drop the tank.So i will give it a try and let you know what happens.Any idea about how long to leave it off for?.

5 - 10 minutes will be fine.
When you reconnect the battery, DONT press the remote fob, that comes a little later! wait at least a minute before opening the door for the car to reboot itself / BSI to wake up
You might hear a beep or bong as you open the door for the first time, dont worry about that.
Turn the ignition on, then off & see if the remote fob still works.

Hi back again.I tried the re set trick but no luck still as it was before, but since then i have managed to get a diagnostic done and it returned a fault code of P0230 (Fuel Pump Relay Control Circuit).Anybody have any experiance on this?, any help would be great cheers.
Any code starting with a P relates to the fuel injection/engine management system.I don't think this is related to your fuel gauge fault.Perhaps there is a fault with the sender unit in the tank giving these erratic readings.
shame really, i thought i was getting somewhere for a mo there, nevermind.I was hoping not to have to take the sender out as its not possible through the hole in the floor as the sender/pump unit will not fit through.Spose i will just have to bite the bullet.Thanx for your help.sometimes you have just gotta get on with it, like it or not.Are there any parts of the sender/pump unit that are repairable or is it a case of having a new one to put in when you get this one out.
If you are prepared to modify the metalwork under the back seat, then it is possible to remove the pump/sender assy without dropping the tank. Not sure if parts can be bought individually.Try some of the french car specialists.hth
Yeah i spose your right its not gonna hurt to modify/maul the floor a little to see whats goin on in there(it is my car after all).Any special info regarding the disconnection of the fuel supply. Will there be any probs with air in the deisel system on re connection ect or is it just plug it all back in and away you go?.
There are 2 pipes (supply & return). They have quick release fittings with a release tab that needs to be pushed in slightly to remove/withdraw the pipe.Careful not to put too much force on the fittings cos the outlet pipe may snap off the pump housing.Refitting is just push pipes on ,then ign on a few times to prime system, et Bob est ton oncle!!
sounds pretty straight forward apart from actually getting the sender through the hole. But thats something i DON'T have to worry about at least.Don't know when i will get the chance to pull the sucker out times a bit tight this week (three daughters) lol.But rest assured when i have had it out and maybe even fixed the problem (crossed fingers) i will return to let you know how i got on.Thanx for all your help.

Hole in rear floor not big enough, sounds like your a HDI owner then.
yeah you got it, just a case of mauling the floor to get the sender out.Just have to try and make a good job of it.Any advice?.
No advice, other then if it was a petrol or normal diesel the hole would have been plenty big enough.
Peugeot never though the 406 would get a HDI lump.
