Time to change cars in a couple of months time. We usually buy a 1 year old and sell on its 3rd birthday. I would like to try and forsee what spec. will be in demand in a couple of years time. So, what colour car should I buy now, air con or climate, alloys or steel, sun roof any use, hatchback or saloon, and so on. Remember that I am interested in 2 years time when I come to sell. Any one out there with a crystal ball 'cos I am fed up with buying the wrong colour and or wrong spec!!

Easy -- buy whatever colour & wheels you want. When you're selling, EVERY buyer will suck their teeth & tell you "it's the wrong colour / got the wrong wheels". :-)
As long as its not candy lime green or powder pink metallic and the wheels aren't too "bling" / racy.
The one thing I would say is, traditional sunroofs are out, people only seem to like the big glass affairs like in the Mercs and Peugeot SWs.

My first question would be are you interested in the car you are going to drive for 2 years or what an unknown person wants in 2 years. So buy what you want, but keep an eye on what are generally popular features and brands to minimise your depreciation.
Personally I prefer hatchbacks to saloons, but estates are better than hatchbacks for extra practicability. The colour of the car should not be extreme, but you have the advantage of seeing the car to decide whether the colour is suitable for the car. My current car is dark metallic blue, not my first choice, but availablity of engine specification was more important than colour. With regard to aircon or climate, this will depend on how prestige or higher model specification the type of car will be. Only conside alloys, but not low profile tyres as the ride is harder unless you are buying a sporty car.
Now make up a shortlist of all your expected choices and see what you expect to buy them for, insure them, tax them and service them for 2 years. Then estimate how much they will be worth in 2 years time. Then choose.
You could cheat a bit and look at the lease costs for different cars as the lease companies are fairly shrewd to know the running costs and depreciation of most models. In general terms certain manufacturers always seem to come off better BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, Honda, Toyota, VW, Mazda, etc
Hope this helps.

If you are looking for someone with a crystal ball, you would be better off looking for a travelling fair than in the backroom.
It seems to me (I'm open to correction here) that what is fashionable in terms of colour and spec of cars has not changed much in the past 4 or 5 years, and will probably not change much in the next 24 months. It would be a brave man to forecast a major change in fashion taking place in the next 2 or 3 years. ("Buy a yellow car. No, really. In 2009 everyone will want one, and will pay big money for one . . . :-)
As for fashionable colours, see

Basically, whatever colour and spec are popular now, will probably be popular then, and the extra you get back in two years time (from choosing the right spec / colour today) will probably not make up for the extra you will pay out now to get them.
