Yesterday I drove from Newcastle to the deep sarf down the A1(M)/A1. Although I wasn't desperately short of petrol but getting low, I decided to fill up at Leeming Bar services - all the signs on the A1 indicated a full range of services including fuel. When I got there, there was the remains of what had once been a petrol forecourt. Now, it's clear that this has been disused for some time - dead as a dodo and large concrete blocks diverting the services road round it.
My question is, who maintains the signs on the main road showing the services? Clearly the petrol symbols should have been taken off or obscured the boards, and I'd like to make this entirely logical point to someone. I assume it's the Highways Agency - can anyone confirm this?
BTW, I don't think they were signposted until you actually leave the A1(M), but there's a Morrisons just off the first exit you hit from the north for Boroughbridge with petrol at sensible prices, not the leg-lifting 94.9p/litre at some of the service areas.

Its because this stretch is due to be upgraded to being a proper motorway. They recently completed the wetherby stretch (which used to be only two lanes up to harrogate with some bendy bits).
There have been a number of public enquires about planning for a major new service station - intended to be just north of bbridge, but now going to be slightly further north.
for info petrol is cheaper at shell and bp in harrogate than bb morrisons although more of a detour.

Thanks for the tip, but I had a long drive ahead & just wanted to get filled up & back on the road. Even so, surely someone must be responsible for blocking out the petrol bits on the signs - not exactly a major engineering feat!
