I have just heard from the garage that my 306 is beyond economical repair as the ECU and coils have failed (aparently a common problem with the 1.4).
I am resigned to the fact that a new car will be on the cards but am not sure how to dispose of the old one. The garage suggested that I call the local council (Hammersmith and Fulham) who will take it away for free, however the cheapskate in me feels I should be able to get something for it!
The car is a 1998 S reg Peugeot 306 1.4L 3 door in white (I know its not the most desirable of models!) with 70,000 on the clock.
Its my first time posting but have read for a while so hopefully someone will be able to help.
Thanks

Second hand ECU, new NON Sagem coil pack & an auto lock smith to code it for the immobiliser, Less then £150 I would say.

Sounds quite reasonable, have been quoted between £800 and £1,000 from Peugeot. Also the garage has said that the ECU problems could have screwed up the rest of the electrics leading to more problems down the line. This had put me off ploughing more money into the car.
Any recomendations of good garages in west London who would carry out this kind of work. My local place won't touch anything to do with electrics on peugeots.

how about trying, Ebay, local paper, etc, advertise it as spares/repair. offers?, who knows, you may be suprised!

Will check out the ebay situation, atleast I might get something for the CD player if nothing else!

I would recomend you find a garage that knows Peugeot / Citroen stuff & let them have a look at it.

What was the actual fault. Forget scrapping the car for this; dealers only think in terms of new units, ECU repairs are quite possible - they just don't want the bother.
As Leepower says; ditch that Sagem coilpack and get a Bougicord-electrofil one - maybe from a specialist French parts supplier.
There's plenty of independant garages that have done dozens of these; depending on the fault, might just need a coilpack.
Carpenters Garage in Bickerseth Rd, Tooting will soon sort you out.

The garage suspected that the coil pack and ecu had been damaged. The car was cutting out below 2,000 revs and the electric odometer kept resetting itself to zero. Have spoken to a garage in wimbledon who seem to think it could not be so dire but now have the problem of getting it there. Will give the garage in tooting a call too to see if they can take a look.

The ECU idle-circuit damage from coil back-spiking is quite common. I've not seen the dash "clocking" itself before.... [Maybe LeePower has?]
The dash can be rebooted, [by removing the shunt in the fusebox] and may survive; checking the main engine earth lead bolt on the gearbox for hidden corrosion would be worthwhile too.

Coil packs killing the ECU is a well known problem for any Peugeot / Citroen owner with the bolt on Sagem type coil pack & TU lump under the bonnet, It was so much of a problem that PSA told Sagem where to stick there coil pack supply contract.
You really need to find a garage who know PSA Peugeot / Citroen stuff.
You can pick up a second hand ECU pretty cheap, a decent auto lock smith will be able to recode it to the car too.
You dont actually have to recode a PSA ECU of this vintage if you just want to test it on another car, thats why I said find a garage who know there PSA stuff ;-)

Dash re setting itself, lucky its a 306 with normal wiring, the multiplexed stuff like later 206 & 307 have loads of weird, strange & odd electrical faults appear when the Sagem coil pack starts spiking the electrical system.
Its pretty normal to end up with a disco effect with the instruments / warning lights & plenty of warning messages up on the display to add to the effect.
