Company looks like having a few problems. I always enjoyed a fry-up if travelling some distance. Hope they succeed...

Always found them a bit expensive, but suppose no more so than motorway services, the fact they had a captive market and few alternatives on A roads for food and drink. If I remember correctly an extra slice of toast was about 50p which is ridiculous considering the price of a white loaf. Spotted some archive footage on the tv this week showing a battered Austin Maxi driving in to the car park of one Little Chef somewhere, noticed it was missing the fns hubcap.
They had photographs of the meals above the frying ranges to the staff could keep glancing up and recognise when the meals were fully cooked.
A piece of British nostalgia due to disappear along with other icons of the 70's.

Although I travel a lot and have an expense account, I can only ever recall going into one once. Their brand of stodge was not what I really needed to stay alert on a long drive !
Little Chef - LeePower
Always found Little Chef far to expensive & very little on the menu, A couple of visits to 2 different branches was enough to put me off for good.
Little Chef - Hamsafar
I've never been to one, the always looked too unappealling, same goes for Happy Eater.
Little Chef - ForumNeedsModerating
They always meant excitement to me.. (sheeesh, what a life you must lead! - ed.)

In t their heyday, (I suppose the early 60's when I was 8-10ish) they were the
A-road motorway service station of choice. A touch of quasi-American 'glamour'
- a cross between a motel & neon-lit American diner/truck stop.

My favourite was their American pancakes with maple syrup & cream followed
by a cup of coffee ('real' coffee too to someone brought up on Nescafe or Bird's Mellow)
In those day even the waitresses (it seemed) regarded it & themselves a cut above,
still near enough WW2 I suppose to contrast sharply with dour grasy spoon cafes &
rationing.

Avete Little Chef..

Little Chef - Mad Maxy
Never had any problem with the quality of stuff at LCs, but always came out feeling that it cost too much. A bit like any barnded roadside eatery, really.

Their proposition has been hit by sharp changes in the nation's food-buying behaviour. RIP Little Chef - and you won't be missed.

The best Little Chef I ever went in was on the A4.It was being run by one middle-aged man on his own and he was doing an excellent job-greeting you when you came, getting you a drink, taking your order, cooking and serving it and taking the money all on his own and the service was far superior to the one's with a group of school- leavers doing the jobs.I almost wrote to the owners to compliment him but thought I might be getting him in to trouble for opening it when he was on his own!!
Little Chef - R75
Fond memories of them when I was younger, recently though they have gone down hill, too expensive and the fact the items are easy to cook yet the staff can still mess it up defies me really!
Little Chef - Westpig
too expensive and indifferent staff
Little Chef - boxsterboy
The food was OK, but their downfall, as far as I am concerned, was that it took so long to have a meal. If I'm on a long journey, I want to get on with it and not waste an hour having an average fry-up. Give me a sarnie and a coffee any (every!) day of the week.
Little Chef - quizman
When my son and daughter were students they worked at Little Chefs. After listening to their stories, you just wouldn't. Especially if you had complained, oh no it's too horrid.
The only people that they fell over were the Yanks, good tips!!!

What used to get me upset about the little Chef was the offer they had for limiteless coffee. where you paid or a cup of coffee and they would refill it as many times as you want. That was the theory anyway, but we found that once you had your first cup they they would never ask if you wanted a refill or make eye contact with you and you had to try and attract their attenton every time. Never liked their food, and what finally put me off them was the their unclean smelly toilets.

So good riddance!!!.

That must have been the one on the {As you're identifying a location, that equates to naming & shaming, therefore deleted - DD}. then.

I hate the places, and only stopped there once about two years ago. Frankly I did not know what to expect (naive, I know) but the last thing I wanted was to be shown to a table and then be surrounded by my bete noire which is the smell of fry-ups!

I detest the smell of these somewhat unhealthy meals and always avoid those large Dept Stores cafeterias that offer 'cheap' breakfasts comprising eggs, bacon, beans, hashes etc..............................yuk.

Good riddance to them and to their arteriosclerotic offerings.
Little Chef - Clanger
When we caravanned as a family of 6 a few years ago, Little Chef was the stopoff of choice. Standard fare, same menu, picky eaters could always find something they remembered from the last trip. They may not suit all tastes and there are horror stories about everything but I definitely think such eateries have their place in motoring life. Got grumbled at for parking across a few car bays once or twice.

Whilst I would never mix with lower classes by eating at Little Chef, I understand that the breakfasts can be very good, but eat early (as soon as they open). There are some skinflints who use discount vouchers, some of which cut the bill by 50%. Disgusting.

I had an Olympic breakfast in the Little Chef at Towcester on the A43 at the end of December.

The bacon was good, the eggs were perfectly cooked, and it arrived in a blink of an eye.

I was the only one in there, but a damn fine start to the day.

Little Chef is alright for breakfast when you're on expenses, but I wouldn't consider eating there any other time.

I suspect the proliferation of chain pubs that have standard menu's has had a lot to do with their business drying up.
Little Chef - Waino
I would guess that a lot of trade has been taken by supermarket cafeterias which are often situated alongside major routes on town edges. The cost is usually less than half of Little Chef's equivalent.

Sounds about right, Tesco usually charge around £3 for a breakfast (you pick and mix)
Little Chef - jag
do the supermarkets use the foodstock that is at the end of it's sell by date, or am i being cinyical?
jag.
Little Chef - BobbyG
I know of one who does and one who does not!

However, neither use food that is past its sell by date.

"I had an Olympic breakfast in the Little Chef at Towcester on the A43 at the end of December."

Ditto, in every respect. It was so good I had exactly the same two days later on my way back (in January).

I wonder if we were there at the same time?

Vin,

the clue is in the statement "I was the only one in there" ;-)

I never really liked them. When I started, on two wheels in the 1960s, a proper transport cafe was much better. I always felt that the Little Eaters tended to push out the real cafes. Even the big motel/cafe on the A1 at Blyth (Notts), where I got told off for putting my crash helmet (even a BMW one), on the table, vanished ages ago.I would sooner go into a caravan cafe rather than pay the much higher Little Chef prices.
The Little Chef on the A45 westbound near Northampton has been abandoned for some time now, before this trouble.
Little Chef - frazerjp
I've been to many LC's in my motoring career, i've never had any problems with them in the past, the olympic is really good in the morning, but the other breakfasts do look bigger on the adverts then they really are!

Im pretty sure that Little Chef next to A45 near Northampton caught fire a few years ago. In fact I dont even remember it being open for years.

There's nothing wrong with a good British breakfast fry up from time to time and I suspect that the fried breaskfast is still far and away their best selling menu item. What a lot of people claim to eat in the way of 'healthy food" and what they actully do eat when given the choice are two different things. I don't think the food is the main reason for the chain's decline' more likely their inabliity to move with the times. A lot of their premises are now run down and grubby and need a great deal of investment. There must however be a market out there for a bright and modern chain of restaurants serving family food at a reasonable price.

Little Chef - bristolmotorspeedway {P}
Always thought they were ok - reliable, if uninspiring, choice of food, usually clean but a tad overpriced. That said, the last couple I have visited were pretty grim and a cup of coffee was all I had!

I do remember a good one up on the A9 towards Inverness - Tomatin I think was the place - the couple of meals I had there back in the late 90s seemed way better than any other Little Chef. Perhaps it was the Highland air? :)
Little Chef - Big Bad Dave
Only went to a Little Chef once about ten years ago. I hadn't been in there five seconds and was involved in a huge fisticuffs (car park issues). Kicked over a few chairs and left without ordering. Won the one in the restaurant, lost the one that followed right after with my wife.
Little Chef - Peter D
When I was travelling on business we had a list of transport cafs that really met the requirement for a breakfast fry up and a Mug of tea. Salt of the earth, still call in very occasionally when going up the Aberdeen. Regards Peter
Little Chef - Falkirk Bairn
Perhaps it was the Highland air?

More likely the 2 hours since leaving Perth & the combined pleasures of a toilet stop and some Bacon & Eggs possibly contributed as much / more than the Tomatin air.
Little Chef - Navara Van man
These days I always carry a couple of flasks of coffe and have my breaks sat in the van. With the comforts of mordern seats, mp3 player and air con who wants to leave the cab to have to smell a nausesating fry up or an expensive cup of weak and luke warm coffe.
Little Chef - Marc
I used to get Little Chef all day breakfasts when I could claim it back on expenses - used to use one on the M1 near Nottingham regularly about five years ago. Food was good and the restaurant/staff was quick, efficient and clean. Wouldn't pay for it out of my own pocket however - too expensive.

On one occasion I did, I stopped at one on an A road in {deleted, although not specifically named, the location given is enough to be classed as naming & shaming - DD} and the service was lousy - three meals all arriving at different times over the space of an hour and loads of stuff on the menu not available - SWMBO thought it was a joke.

I guess the quality of food and service was down to the individual management and staff of each branch.

As someone else has already mentioned there are loads of these places around the country that have been boarded up for years so I guess it was a dwindling business - people nowadays prefer M&S sandwiches at Moto etc
Little Chef - barneybee
I used to work at one when I was in college. I guess culturally we are all now in the habit of grabbing a sandwich/Mc D's etc than sitting down for a meal.

I'll always remember a promotion that was on fish and chips, an elderly couple came in and ordered two portions. The lady was shocked when literally two portions of fish and chips arrived at her table, she asked where the mushy peas and bread & butter were. I spent some time explaining that they were at an additional cost, she was not impressed. Nor would I be at something like 50p for one slice of bread with some butter on!

Saying that I had a good time working there!
Little Chef - Alebear
There is a simple reason that Little Chef has found itself in trouble (aside from the eroding of standards of food and service by successive owners since Forte was taken over).
The reason is my friend. Anything he enjoys/ supports tends to go for a Burton. He loves all things Rover - look what happened there. He enjoys Airfix kits - oh dear. One of his favourite pints was Young's best bitter - no longer exists as an independent brewer in London. Little Chef (often referred to as Little Thief by another friend) was his real treat - Olympic Breakfasts in particular....
I must tell you that he has just bought a new Fiat Panda. You have been warned.

More outlets closing, where do we go for a tea/coffee break & something to eat with companies like these closing so many outlets ?

Turn off the motorway, find a nice little village or town with a good pub and have a juicy steak.

Little Chef - MikeTorque

I'm not on the motorway, the Little Chefs I use are on the A roads and most of the pubs have closed, and I don't like or eat steak (yuk).

Little Chef - jamie745

I went to this little countryside pub in Scotland once which served an entire pigs ribcage on a plate, seasoned and cooked lovely.

What happened to the Heston Blumenthal collaboration?
Little Chef - MikeTorque

It put prices up that's what happened. Some outlets have done well from it if you're willing to pay silly prices for poncy food (which I'm not), other outlets suffered as a result of investment being withheld from the regular outlets to finance the HB updates outlets.

That's one of the reasons the regular outlets have suffered and some of which are being closed. Maintenance issues haven't been addressed efficiently by head office. Too often toilets are in need of repair, air conditioning isn't working, building issues not addressed etc. because head office have refused to authorise maintenance repair work in a timely manner.

The food is much better these days. I've had many a nice meal and meetings in a Little Chef.

Sure wish they would provide more comfortable (and padded) seating at some of their locations, those red plastic seats were a seriously bad investment & major mistake. They must have lost a lot of trade because of those horrible things, certainly lost some of our trade where they are fitted.

However, LC they haven't moved quickly enough with the changing Drive-by market demands, they've been missing out on the drive thru markets for ages, something they now plan to address.

Those seats were purchased so that people wouldn't get too comfy and fill seats while other customers went elsewhere when the plaace was full,

I do believe there was an article on it when macd's opened its one of it first restaurants in london in the 70's, obviously everyone has copied them..

Little Chef - barney100
Totally agree little Chefs are just too expensive for what they are. Not as bad as motorway services though on the whole though.
Little Chef - Falkirk Bairn

The London 2012 Olympics took LC to court claiming they had no right to the OLYMPIC Breakfasts,

London 2012 LOST - LC have been running Olympic Breakfasts for longer than London has been hosting the 2012 Games.

One up for the Little Chef
