Not motoring though may stop people being caught out. If you get a message left for you something like:

"Hi this is James from the Information Team, this is our second attempt to contact you, please call us on 0871 2089407, Thanks"

It is a scam, the number you call is premium rate and probably cost you £1 plus to call it, it will be a dead line, if you dial 1471 the call has come from 0871 2089406.

Similar on the mobilee - your phone rings once and cuts off - you think you have missed a real call - phone back and it is a premium rate number although it starts 07XXX

Strictly speaking no premium numbers start with "07"...however the number will almost certainly start with "070" which makes it a "Personal" number. Charges to personal numbers can be up to £1.50/minute. Because the number starts with "07" many people assume it is simply a mobile number.

This is what we know about the number you entered (08712089407).

ICSTIS does not regulate this type of number. However we can tell you the following.

* This is classified as a Special Services higher rate: up to and including 10p for BT customers (non-internet) number.
* It is provided by TELSTRA EUROPE LIMITED.
* And costs 10ppm [in pence or pounds where 'pm' means 'per minute' and 'pc' means 'per call'].

Which one I wonder?

We've had several dodgy things like this recently. One was an answerphone message to call regarding a radio that we've allegedly won. It's an 070-something number, and is a well publicised scam.
We've also had a fake "missed delivery" card through the door from a non-existent courier asking us to call to arrange redelivery of a missed item (neither the courier or item exists, and the number costs £5+ / min to call according to the website I found while looking it up)
Also we get these "automated text messages" left on the answerphone where the message is "blank" and to call this number for more information.

And yes, we have signed up to the Telephone Preference Service. As usual it only affects companies who give a stuff about the law.

Cheers

I won't delete this however; as Cheddar also pointed out - "may stop people being caught out"
