AUDI Cabriolet - Miles
I am thinking of purchasing a 1995 AUDI Cabriolet, has anyone out there got any tips on what to look out for?, or horror stories!!

My horror story was with a 93 2.6 v6 when the timing belt failed although it had been changed at the correct time.

Complete engine rebuild and for some reason the two Cats. had to be replaced also.

Very very expensive.

search long and hard, go for national searches too as cars seem cheaper up north. Look for full service history, no buts or "well mate"!!!!
I got a 95 VW recently which i think is very similar to the Audi, be ruthless in getting history, authentic milage and even get a check made via the AA as to HP, crash history etc. I have seen many Auid's being driven be Mafia looking lads who would not blink at thrashing the engine to pieces!

How much, I saw a pretty average example, in lightish blue, think it was a '95 too.
It was going for £13k!
Is that seriously the going price?

Obviously, it has to have the 2.6 v6 engine, full service history essential, servicing will be on the expensive side.
If at (or near) 72K, a new cambelt is much cheaper than a new engine.

look what the cat brought in, check out Autotrader yourself Miles, you can probably talk some of these people down by a couple of grand, or get pie in your face for being insulting! Always worth a go....

Do you have the 2.6 in mind? Or the 2.0 4 cylinder?

The 2.6 is much more refined, and I mean *much* more - in the A80 saloon these are like two different cars.

BTW, our A4 2.6 (front wheel drive) has only one cat, not two.

This model is based on the A80/Coupe, I believe, and is a tough car. This is the last really tough Audi before the A4/new A6 and they really are 'Mercedes' quality (the proof of which is that they made a taxi version A80!).

The downside is the crashy ride (bump/thump from the suspension), curiously insensitive power steering and outrageous parts prices from main dealers.

Let us know if you buy one!

Unfortunately I think it?s going to have to be the 1.8, 2.0 or 2.3 because I am under 30, live in Manchester and don?t want to pay a four figure insurance premium!. Going to start looking seriously in September/October, just doing my homework at the moment.

The 2.3 is a nice engine too - much smoother than the 1.8 or 2.0 - but these cars will be older, I think.
