Anyone know what the weathers like in the Alps in mid summer?
I want to go biking there but I don't want to be taking loads of foul weather gear. [1]
The alternative would be travel further south. Anyone got any experience of the Pyrenees? [2]
[1] Or loads of gear of any kind.
[2] Scuse spelling.

can be magnificent
can be crap...I've had to turn back on a pass in the Southern French Alps in mid June before in a snowstorm
you'd be unlucky to get snow July/August but rain is perfectly possible - and when it rains in the Alps it rains
plenty of bikers about in the summer though

I know the pyrenees a bit. they are a lot lower than the alps and therefore not so varied in weather although it is possible to get crap weather. The mistral affects the alps while the pyrs are close to the sea so get affected by that.
if i had to go for the weather I would go to the pyrenees. be warned there are one helluva lot of tourists.

Dave,
The Tyrolean Alps are usually sunny, warm and plesant during the summer, the higher you get the colder it gets. I was up at Gloss Glotner (sorry about spelling) which is an Glacier high in the Austrian Alps in t-shirt and jeans.

Alpe d'Huez and Guillestre (in the Hautes Alpes) last July/August, very hot in the valleys, pleasant at altitude.
The two merciless thunderstorms were specially co ordinated with the occasions I needed to strike camp!!.

It can be, but it can also be miserable and you need to pick the time of year. Last "summer" in the northwest was abysmal.
Oh, and watch out for the midges and mozzies!

Wait until after October and go *really* south - The Andes. Really beautiful, really impressive, @!#$ all in the way of tourists.
Advice available.

southern Alps, after Grenoble and towards Menton on the Cote d'Azur should be no probs during summer. But do expect freak changes, it was snowing last yr at 3500m+ around Chamberey mountain region. Otherwise you should be ok in T-shirt etc..

Do also check your maps and road info. Many Swiss roads are shut for the winter and don't open until late May. The alternatives are expensive tunnels (sometimes on trains) or long detours. Wherever you go needs checking and I agree with all previous comments re weather - T shirt and jeans one minute,
-5C and hail the next! Enjoy!

Many thanks Guys.
It's decided.
Ferry to Bil-bow [1]. Biking in the Pyrenees.
That way we get the advantage of (hopefully) a full nights sleep on the ferry!
As for Scotland - yeah it is stunning. Especially in Spring. However Scotland was designed by God for sailing. He had other dryer areas in mind for two wheeled motorsport. Who am I to disagree?
[1] Must learn to spell.
