Back Out of Business - Honest John
The bug has done someting to IE6 that prevents me getting into the website to make any changes. So the main site's a dead zone for the time being. On top of that, for another stupid reason, I can't get my mail. So if any of you were wondering what's going on, that's it. I am one very seriously fed up geezer. The PC is in the shop to uninstall and re-install IE6. Meanwhile I'm messing around with a laptop here that doesn't contain any of the files or facilities I need.

I have found that unless I re-install Windows and all my applications and files at least once a year the bl**dy thing becomes so corrupt that it is more trouble than it is worth. Constantly surfing the net and installing and then uninstalling various bits and pieces eventually shafts something vital in the registary and anyone less than a software expert is without hope of righting the thing.

At the moment my PC keeps dialing itself online whenever I leave it on it's own for a while. Luckily I'm on unmetered access, but unltil I become aware of it I've lost all my incoming calls and therefore potential business.

On the reliability level, a PC is somewhere round the quality of an Austin Allegro built by Red Robbo on a bad day.

I would be extremely careful about this. A friend of mine inadvertantly downloaded a premium rate dialup file (for a porn site no less). it made itself the default dial up number and cost him £400. Check this isn't the case with you.

Do you leave outlook on? Outlook can dial up to check for emails without being prompted.

I believe this sort of dodgy behavior can be avoided by going to the security settings in IE and setting "Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting" to either prompt or disable.
Of course the best tactic is to avoid these sites but what the porn industry does on the internet today others will do tommorow.

Tom,
In outlook express /tools /options/general there is a box for checking if you have any new messages in a pre-determined time.
This of course means that your computer will dial automatically up to your isp to see if you have any.
Have you looked to see if this option is checked or not.

Thanks, Alvin. That was the case and I have changed it to check every time I start Outlook Express.
Re: Back Out of Business - Andy P
Just for info, my PC came with a program called Big Fix. When activated, it checks the PC, then the Big Fix site. If there are any updates/bug fixes that my machine needs, Big Fix displays a list so I can download those I want. Since I started using it, I've not had any problems (that was four months ago, so it must be doing something right.)
