Have just bought the car for my son. It runs very well apart from the fact that occasionally, usually when cold, the engine just dies. The car always restarts on the key first time. Any ideas?

Loose earth strap - corroded, poor connection etc. Had similar on Mondeo - some wire wool & a spanner soon sorted this. If this were the case, then it would also be a poor starter. Could be 101 things, though, as I'm not a techie!!

Slight air leak or fast idle device not working/out-of adjustment.
|
I should also add that some Fords of this era required the throttle pedal to be down for starting;others were foot off pedal;what does the driver's manual say??

Would a diesel die because of a loose earth? Petrol certainly, diesel, perhaps not.
|
Possibly. If the stop solenoin loses its earth the engine would stop.
