Well my father finally realised what he did about two years ago and demanded his Forester XT back. I've only done 14,000 miles in it and I'm very sorry to see it go. For me, its real selling points were (in no particular order) a huge amount of internal storage room, great ride for a sporty car, and easy access and egress. It has also been supremely reliable. So what to replace it with?

Well I've taken Dad's old Forester (a 99V with 40,000miles) , and traded it in for a 14 month old, 20,000 mile, Subaru Outback 3.0Rn. Its a top of the range with sat nav, electric heated seats and CD as well as cassette players - very useful with young children. Costing £15,500 plus the old car. I get it next week. I can't wait to get behind a creamy flat 6-cyl engine with five speed tiptronic. No change in insurance costs and probably no worse economy......

I'll keep you informed.

You'll enjoy it Espada.i'just completed the first 4000 miles in my Legacy 3.0R Spec B. An absolute peach of a car. I've averaged between 24 and 25 mpg with very spirited driving.
Faults so far..... the clip that holds the drivers mat in position was loose on collection, fixed at first service. And, er, that's it. Disappointing it wasn't perfect, I must write to Warranty Direct and let them know.

Have fun but watch don't get caught!

Right

Car is 14 months old and has 22,000 miles but looks and drives like new. It was a Subaru UK managers car (I have his name). I bought it from a Subaru dealer on the south coast and we met up near Birmingham to swap cars. Dealer very easy to deal with and was serviced on time, just before I got it and had six months tax on it, like the one I p/xed. Car is pretty clean thoughout with two very minor marks in the front of the cabin. The boot and rear seating area are spotless.

Drove it back up the M5 and M6 back to Manchester. It is extremely smooth - much more so than my old Volvo S80 2.9.

Immediate dislikes - uummmm, the steering is bit light, its got electric seats so I have not yet found the most comfortable position and the dash is a little like the Starship Enterprise with so many buttons, but I got used to it very quickly. No headlamp washers, despite having all the other 'winter pack' items (Heated seats, wiper de-icer, floor mats).

Likes - beautifully finished, the SatNav is very intuitive (I have never used one before) and includes postcode search (Better than my partner's Lexus LS430 then), its fast, its fast, its fast and quiet and everything just works (like my old Scooby). It's in a different league of sophistication to the Forester XT that my father has taken over.

The fuel consumption from Worthing to Manchester was just over 30mpg - not bad for a 3.0 6-cyl auto. No worse if not better than the Forester, and probably a touch better around town.

I'll let you know how I get on.

30 mpg (ish) in a 3 litre - - -the best I've ever seen in a 2.5 auto is 32 mpg, so you're doing well! My normal consumption is about 25 mpg, but that's on twisty lanes. A friend rarely gets more than 20 out of his Spec B.

Now you come to mention it, the absence of headlight washers on the Legacy is a major pain - with the rain this week and more mud about, it reminds me that I had to clean the lights almost every day last winter (probably has something to do with living on a farm), but nevertheless, they get absolutely filthy and quickly start to become less effective. Can't understand why there is no cleaning mechanism; guess the shape of the lights makes it difficult, but given the sort of environments Subarus tend to get used in it is a curious oversight.

Enjoy it.

30 mpg is very good, you'll not get that very often once you get to enjoy it! My Spec B has returned about 24mpg overall in the 4000 miles I've owned it, that includes 1000 miles of under 4000 rpm and 3000 miles of fun. I have managed to scrape 30mpg once, driving like a vicar but it didn't last long. I've checked the fuel computer against brim-to-brim fill-ups and it's within 0.5mpg, so pretty good.

Nick,

Did you buy the car from new?

I've found our Forester's fuel economy improved at about 10,000 miles when the engine and gearbox had loosened-up; at 15,000, the gearbox is still getting easier.

I'm not sure if this is peculiar to Subaru's, thought the 1,000 mile oil change 1st service tends to re-inforce this likelyhood.

My Forester certainly improved consumption at about 16,000 miles and was always better in the summer than winter by about 10%.

I am thinking about replacing my current car with a Subaru (had an Imprezza 5/6 years ago) and would like your impressions of the Forrester XT. I have read a few reviews, but nobody has done an in dept one as yet. Thinking about the Imprezza I remember the fun it was and how well built and reliable it was also, but fuel was a bit of a downer. Thirsty, yes it was, although I have no commute these days so not so relavant.

Thanks

Just bought a Forester XT Auto, last of the 06's. Researching is quite tricky o/a little appetite for a low volume marque, which is one good reason to like them. Much of the comment on this forum is very supportive (no doubt a few biased owners!). We had test drives in normally aspirated foresters, but the XT feels all the more meaty. First impressions are great; very composed, well sorted chassis, strong surge of smooth power n torque. Sure there's lots of choice among the alternatives and everyone will jump to the Subaru=thirst equation, but it feels a really well-sorted, 'together' car. And on a very good deal, 3yr/30k mile ownership could marginalise the thirst issue. I can imagine owing this for a long time,,,
Barely enough miles for mpg numbers as yet. Dealers good (my deal was a thoroughly pleasurable experience start to finish, and that's a first for me).

Did you buy the car from new?

Yes and no. it was pre-reg'd by Subaru and then sat around for 6 months until I bought it with 10 miles on the clock. It has certainly loosened up and seems to be getting smoother and smoother. I found the gearbox downshift from 5th to 4th a bit baulky at first but that has settled in now. I thought 6 speeds was one too many but I prefer it now, at least with this engine.
It's such an enjoyable car to drive, I would guess at least a quarter of the 4500 miles now on it were driven just for pleasure, going the long way round etc.

We had exactly the same gearchange problem (but on a 5 speed box) , but it's got better as the milage built-up.

"Que ?"

It's a spoof, PU. Rather a good one, IMHO, so may get hit by MS lawyers before long. Job for you?
Espada's new car - Happy Blue!
Detailed impresssions of the Forester XT....

Well made, fast, comfortable, easy to drive and access. Not many sophisticated features, but ours had winter pack so had in total lots of toys.

Noisy above 80-85mph, about 28mpg on a fast run (average 80mph), about 22mpg around town at best. We had the automatic and the gear ratios are not ideal.

Any questions, e-mail me via the mods.
Espada's new car - AlastairM
Thanks for the reviews/impressions am going to test drive one and see what I make of it. I remember the Imprezza as having a solid chassis, well put together and really well engineered. The cabin was however a bit .....Japanese, dark and a bit plasticky, good seats though.
Espada's new car - Happy Blue!
Excellent seats and the dash is far better than the 1980s/1990s designs that were almost generic of Japanese cars. My Outback dash is almost Audi like in its classiness!
