Can anyone recommend a cheap car for my teenage son with long legs - 34 in but the problem is not so much getting the seat back, more in avoiding the legs jamming under the wheel. So far I have only found the Ford Focus which fits, because the wheel adjusts not just for height but also in and out, allowing it to be pulled out so clears knees. However this is too new and big and expensive for teenager. Morris Minor also fits but not many about and expensive for what they are. Many thanks for your ideas.

Older model astra 4 or 5 door - has lots of room to move seat back, and unless it has a sunroof, room to put his head, and still reach the steerin g wheel, radio, gearshift!
I'm quite tall, and have never had problems with mine.

The current Astra has a lot more leg room than the Focus. Vauxhall (excluding Vectra) generally allow more seat travel rearwards than other manufacturers, they also manage to provide more headroom than others. I have always suffered from lack of leg/head room but have done best with Vauxhalls over the last few years.

try a yaris or KA
you will be surprised how much room there is in a yaris -like a tadis them things

I am 6'4" blessed with long legs and found a 1990 Vw Jetta ( or a golf ) to be very comfortable and a damn good car too.
The Mk III was also roomy - the 3 door is better as your view out isn't hampered by the B pillar

Forget 106 / saxo brigade, the pedals are too close together and there is nowhere near enough room. a Renault 5 is better.

Good point on the pedals, Marcus!
If you have huge feet, this can be a major concern!
Grahame, get junior to put on his biggest, most clumpy shoes when he tries the car out!

The pedals in a 106 that I tried were so close together, that at my feet hit more than one pedal and my knees were good friends with many parts of the dash. The Rover 100, BSM had when I learnt to drive was awful in every area of comfort and in my driving lessons I hit both the accelerator and the brake in emergency stops. I quickly moved to a different car.
The older Mk 4 Escort my mother had had a bit of room for me but awful seats and everything else. The old model Corsa I have which I deleted the sunroof has plenty of room for me, and I can choose which pedal to press too. Not an awful car either, esp the post 97 facelift with the sports suspension. I didn't find the Golf very good for me, but that might just be my shape.
As a general rule just forget the sunroof on any model and it starts to make a bit more sense for tall drivers.

Sorry, I meant the AA used the Rover 100. Never tried the Renault 5, but didn't find the Astra anything special.

Old Polos (pre Hreg) fit me and I'm 33in leg. Newer ones seem to have higher seats.

I am a gargantuan 6'6" with size 13s. My old Golf mk2 was very comfortable, and my mums Punto is pleasant even on long journeys but the footwell is a bit crampt. My Carlton is just brilliant for space, with the seat all the way back it is almost too far!
Worst car I have ever driven not just for space but for everything else too was the Corsa I learned to drive in. It was vile, my driving was 10 times better in the Punto.

97 Polo with height adjustable drivers seat fits me reasonably well. Footwell not that spacious but does have a clutch pedal footrest and the pedals are in the middle where they should be (unlike 106etc)
99 Mondeo with Height adjustable seat and reach+rake steering wheel adjustment is Great.
(BTW I'm 6'2" with 34"leg)

This feels slightly pervy - I've never posted my inside leg measurement on the Web before!

I'm 6'3" and 36" leg - have driven a Mini 850 without issue (just had to spread'em) but have driven MkII Golfs ever since and they, along with Corrados, easily accommodate taller drivers in comfort.

Guy, your contribution of 1859 - very interesting - mini could be best solution, if build quality and reliability has improved since the one I drove in the 1960s. Several people have recommended Golfs - what is the Corrado ?
We have tried Puntos and Vauxhalls without success - problem seems to be the length of son's leg above knee, which causes fouling of the wheel, rather than overall leg length.
Many thanks to all contributors on this question - you have given me a good list of cars to try.

I'm just over 6ft, 34" leg. Drove a Mini Cooper last week. I was quite comfortable and didn't have the seat right back.

Whilst there's a long list of reasons against, there are three good arguments for a Fiat Panda.
1. Cheap as chips
2. Cheap to insure
3. About the only car I've ever sat in that I can barely touch the pedals with the seat fully back (33" inside leg, suits me sir)
