Got some dot4 brake fliud yesterday to do fliud change in vw polo, noticed the container had synthetic on the side.Has dot 4 always been synthetic?have not noticed on previous containers-says its compatible with dot 3 and dot4

If it's DOT 4 then it will be ok. It's probably the case that all brake fluids can be deemed 'synthetic' (some special Citroen fluids excepted) in as much as they are not refined from mineral oils. The one not to mix with normal (DOT 3 or 4) fluid is DOT 5 silicone fluid.

Everything is synthetic nowadays, including food. The days when you could just dig a hole in your back garden and ladle out gallons of pure natural brake fluid are long gone.

DOT 3/4 will mix with any other DOT3 or 4,it is SILICONE that won't mix!
