The temp gauge on my Mondeo (Mk3, 2.0 Petrol) is taking a long time to register 'normal', whereas up until now it reached 'normal' wihtin about a mile or 2. I had gone about 20 miles yesterday before it was on the normal mark. Checked top hose after short run today and it was warm. Also, after a short stop when I start the engine again, it registers normal again. So any experience as to what is the most likely cause?
Thanks, Y.

a new temp sensor is a cheap option clean the plug fit a new one and try it? but im guessing maybe thermostat is slightly open same again a cheap repair. good luck.

Thermostat on the Mk3 is not that cheap :-( Supplied as part of the housing, requires removal of headlight and fiddling with power steering stuff to change. The gauge temp range from "just off cold" to "just below 1/2 way" is minimal on the Mk3.
And Ford put the thermostat on coolant inlet to the Duratec block, not the exit. Good for shopper cars.

Thanks - the Haynes manual talks about taking the headlight off - so yes, a bit of a fiddle.
Might as well bite the bullet then .... thanks again!

Am I correct in assuming like my mondeo that until it reaches operating temp then it revs around 1000 on tickover then reduces when all is ok .If the engine is operating normally then the temp gauge is faulty and not the thermostat.

Well it was the thermostat - new part, which includes housing was £80. Bloke in the garage said it was a bit of a job - as said earlier, need to take so much off just to get at it. Anyway, combined it with a coolant flush, and all seems fine and back to normal now.
Thought someone might like to know!

Thanks - it's always useful/interesting to know the outcome of these things.
