IIRC the Euro IV has electrcal control of the variable vane turbo and the Euro III is via vacuum, this fits with Quinny100s assertions above so should prove definative when you look under the bonnet.
Also IIRC I think all diesels registered after 31/12/05 had to be Euro IV so if yours is an early 2006 55 it will be Euro IV however if it is a late 2005 55 it could be Euro III.

You could have IV's registered before 31/12/05;the requirement is for all diesels registered after to be IV.St V is 01/01/10.

Yes but not IIIs after?

That's what I said!It is ,of course,FIRST registration that we are talking about.

No you didn't I did! ;-)
The key point is that a Euro III had to be reg'd before 31/12/05, yes they could have been pre reg'd and sold as such in 2006 however the OP would surely know whether his car was first registered in 2005 or 2006.

Thanks guys, it was registered 09/09/05, (an early 55 reg) and it has a vacuum operated V-V turbo, so it looks like it's a Euro III. The vcarfueldata.org.uk link didn't work BTW.

Found the link now vcacarfueldata.org.uk and it is definitely a Euro III.
my V5 says:
CO - 0.328
NOx - 0.362
HC+NOx - 0.406
Particulates - 0.030
