millers diesel power plus - nand
just wanted some quick advice. Is it worthwhile to regularly use miller's diesel power plus with every fuel tankful fill. Does it have the potential to cause damage to the engine.Where is the best place to buy it from.
my current cars are 2001 BMW 530DA
2005 SAAB 9-3 TiD 150bhp manual

many thanks

Made a positive difference in my 306 and also in my current car. (1.9 Toledo TDI)

Positive in what way, mpg? performance? noise level?
I have a Pug 306 HDi at present.

Ask Millers what exactly it does.

You can buy it in 1 gallon tins, cheaper than those little bottles.

I've managed to convince myself it's useful - I had a 'old-tech' disel a few years ago that would get quite smoky, presumably as the injectors got dirtier. A couple of tankfuls on double strength DPP would reduce the smoke quite noticeably, so I also used it pre-MOT.

I think there must be some nasty stuff in it though - no matter how careful I am the smell seems to linger in and aound the car for a while after I've put it in. FWIW I think BP Ultimate diesel and the Shell equivalent have the same whiff so maybe they use similar stuff as the additives?

As far as I'm concerned the jury's out on this stuff.
If you use it in the recommended concentration, its adds quite a few pence to the cost of each litre, and to be honest I never found it made any real difference to either of my cars. Having said that, both of the cars I have used in in were quite new, ie less than 40K miles with a lot of motorway work.
Perhaps in older non PD or common rail diesels it does have a beneficial result.
What does work for me is about 1ml/litre of acetone in the tank.
I get better throttle response and 2-3 mpg more straight away if I use this.

A bottle costs <=£10, and treats 500l used as directed. So 2p/l or less - makes BP Ultimate a more expensive option, though I'm not saying they're equivalent.

I have said this before, BP Ult has the same aroma as Millers so I reckon uses the same cetane boosters.

I dunno about the shell stuff, but I certainly agree on the both BP regular and ultimate diesel, I smelt this Millers smell several times.

It's hard to imagine that 1 capful in, say, 60L would make much difference - that's getting towards practically homeopathic dilutions. Maybe that's the point - the plaecebo effect?

I tried in my car (MB C270CDi) for several tankfuls and it didn't make any noticeable difference, although that engine has a pretty easy time anyway.

Quakery is still alive and thriving judging by the many bottles promising everything available on the shelves .One large retail outlet in Germany the staff in the warehouse used to call it the dream shelf.

Perhaps so though that has nothing to do with Millers, Millers contains cetane boosters so has a clear potential benefit with std / supermarket diesel, the only flip side is that the likes of BP Ultimate also contain cetane boosters and may well be a better way of achieving the same thing, it also seems (though not conclusively confirmed) that in addition to the cost penalty there is really no point in using Millers with Ultimate.

my golf manual says Not to put any additive in to diesel powered engines but if you have a petrol engine then additives can be used.Does your owners manual give any advice as you would of thought the manufacturer should know best.
Well you think they do?

I was thinking of using this on my 05 Mondeo TDCi - I called Millers Technical advice - they told me that for EU4 engines they were developing a new version !

The guy I spoke with didnt inspire confidence that it (the existing power plus) wouldnt cause long term problems.

In the end, I emailed Shell for their list of garages who sell Diesel Plus - I stick with this now and avoid any risk !!!

Matt

PS I had already bought a big (10 litre ?) can of the stuff - took it back for a refund.

Be warned - with the big can I was wondering how to get it into my tank in "measured" amounts AND there is a best before date stamped on the can - you would need to be racking up the miles to use it before the expiry date.
