How much diesel fuel are you legally allowed to store?
Got 5p off a litre at Tescos so thought about filling my 5 gallon plastic tank and car at same time!
Has anyone else tried this?
Cheers, Ian

Diesel will be ok as its not flamable like petrol but make sure it cant leak into any drains or onto any tarmac as it will ruin it if it does,.to be honest i would fill my tank and leave it at that.

AKAIK the maximum size petrol can you can store at home is 5 litres if in approved plastic cans, I believe but am not sure that you can still have 20 litres in a steel "Jerrican" type container.
For diesel you can have a 10 litre black plastic container. (Again probably more if steel)
There are some regulations about proximity to the house and total quantities , but not sure where you would look. Probably a Health & Safety enquiry??
The limiting factor is that most garages will not sell more than 5 litres of any fuel and then only in the proper plastic cans.
I usually have at least 15 litres of petrol in 3 cans, one unleaded for 4 stroke lawnmwer, one 50:1 mix for strimmer, and one 100:1 for outboard, probably illegal!!
I have not so far felt any need for a spare diesel can - as very unlikely ever to run out !

there is no danger carrying 5 gallons of diesel in plastic cans ,they dont have to be marked like petrol as they are not a petroleum spirit and many a works van carries diesel out to machines in 5 gallon cans of various types
regarding storage the rules are changing but its something like 3500 litres of oil storage for domestic use ,bunding rules apply in some cases
if you think you will have problems at the pumps just fill the can in the boot

There is a 100 litre limit on the Tesco deal.
There is no problem (that I have come across) with filling 20 litre METAL jerrycans marked up for the purpose. See Machine Mart or similar.

You're gonna mess around filling a 5 gallon can and then get diesel spills down the side of the car to save a quid?

Is this a long term investment or a short term quick return.

Five gallons in a steel jerry is well over 20kg - make sure you know your manual handling stuff. Bending for half that weight can put your back out.

Isn't it strange how we drivers react to fuel price changes? If my favourite loaf of bread or tin of beans or whatever dropped by 5p, I wouldn't think about how much I could buy and store cos after all its only 5p! But when it comes to fuel we will drive around trying to get the cheapest deal to save what, a few quid? If that?

Would you be able to say how much your last loaf of bread or pint of milk cost? No neither can I, but I do know how much my last litre of diesel was!

More than 200 litres of fuel (except central heating oil) and you come under the fuel storage regs, which means buded tank etc.

Exactly Bobby - I couldn't tell you what price the petrol was I last put in the car. Or how high the local station is. I woudln't dream of driving out of my way to save a few pence per litre.

I drive, the light comes on, I drive a little more, then stop at the nearest petrol station I come to and stick 20 quid in.

Job done!

Beans low salt 39p Wholemeal loaf 90p with 2.7grams fat per 100grams,useless piece of information except that the beans have gone up from 17p in 12 months and the loaf from 55p.Hidden supermarket price increases are a lot more of a concern than a few pence on fuel.

Do none of you work? The average full time male worker earns about £15 an hour. If it takes you just 5 minutes to read this thread, think about it and respond that costs you £1.25 in lost wages. The saving is 5p a litre. A £1.25 saving equates to 25 litres.
In response to OP I would stop thinking about ways to save money on petrol in this way. Your savings are effectivly being wiped out at 1 litre per minute. That is if you intend to store, say 120 litres extra, don't spend anymore time than 2 hours wondering how.

You are assuming we are not still getting paid by our employers whilst we write these posts? :)

But you dont eat 50 tins of beans a a week., I get through 50 litres of fuel a week so a 5p saving is (gets out fingers - is errrrrrrr) why thats two pounds 50p. Thats 10 fags, 1/2 a pint of beer, the times for 4 days.

At £5 a pint I'd want to save the pennies too!

petrol regs here :-
www.london-fire.gov.uk/fire_safety/petroleum/domes...p

no mention of diesel, so there may be no formal legislation, though somebody will sooner or later mention the taxi driver who was done for storing diesel in a wheelie bin during the last tanker drivers strike

An ex-colleague of mine told me he and his wife once went to a Tesco garage in seperate cars, and backed one car in close to the other so they could get the 5p off two tankfulls in one fill-up! But then he is a bit of a tightwad. IMO its really not worth the hassle to save £5 or less..

www.netregs.gov.uk/netregs/275207/275441/?lang=_e will tell you all you need to know about fuel storage.

200 litres or more and you are required to comply. I guess your household insureance company would like to know was well!

local ,200 litre rule applies to business premises , I agree with the posters saying its not worth the bother and I only posted the rules as I read them but would it not be easier to put the shopping through the checkout in 2 lots paying seperatly and getting 2 vouchers and use one at the next tesco fill up? or do they need to be used that day ?

I don't shop at Tesco, but don't you have to spend over £50 on groceries to get the 5p/litre fuel voucher, or have they changed it? So to get 2 vouchers, you'd have to spend over £100 in the supermarket?
